FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots have placed running back Shane Vereen on injured reserve with a designation to return.
The move means Vereen must miss eight weeks before he is eligible to play in a game. He was injured in Sunday’s 23-21 win over the Buffalo Bills. He had a small break in his left wrist and underwent surgery on Monday, Fox Sports reported. The Patriots said he missed practice on Monday and Tuesday with a wrist injury.

Vereen rushed for a career-high 101 yards and gained 58 on seven receptions in the opener.
The Patriots re-signed tight end Matthew Mulligan, who joins Michael Hoomanawanui as the team’s only healthy tight ends.
Mulligan is West Enfield native and graduate of tiny Penobscot Valley High School. He played college football at Husson University and the University of Maine.
He is the third Maine native to play for the Patriots, joining Gardiner’s Dave Cloutier (1964) and Biddeford’s Dennis Gadbois (1987-1988). His reuptation is as a blocker. He has started 20 of the 50 games he has played in, with 14 catches for 144 yards and one touchdown.
Mullian spent three years with the New York Jets and one with St. Louis before spending training camp with the Green Pay Packers. He also spent several days with the Patriots last week.
New England also made two practice squad moves Tuesday, signing defensive lineman A.J. Francis and releasing wide receiver Quentin Sims.
