BOSTON – The game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox on Friday night was postponed by rain.

The opener of the four-game series was called off after rain began in the afternoon. The game was rescheduled as part of a day-night doubleheader June 18.

Felix Doubront, who was scheduled to start for Boston, probably will start Tuesday against the Indians in Cleveland.

Manager John Farrell left the rotation for the rest of the series with the Rays intact with Jon Lester starting Saturday followed by Clay Buchholz and Ryan Dempster.

INDIANS: Pitcher Carlos Carrasco was suspended for eight games by Major League Baseball for hitting Kevin Youkilis of the New York Yankees with a pitch.

Carrasco had just finished serving a five-game suspension for a 2011 incident when he drilled Youkilis in the fourth inning of the Yankees’ 14-1 victory Tuesday, one pitch after giving up a two-run homer to Robinson Cano.

Carrasco was apologetic following the game and said he didn’t throw intentionally at Youkilis, but slipped and hit him in the left shoulder.

The right-hander was suspended two years ago for throwing at Kansas City’s Billy Butler.

ATHLETICS: Second baseman Scott Sizemore is scheduled for a second reconstructive surgery on his left knee Tuesday after he missed all of last season.

BLUE JAYS: Right-hander Edgar Gonzalez was sent to Triple-A Buffalo to make room on the 25-man roster for outfielder Casper Wells, who was claimed on waivers Wednesday from the Seattle Mariners.

WHITE SOX: Second baseman Gordon Beckham, who is hitting .316, was put on the 15-day disabled list with a broken bone in his left wrist.

YANKEES: Andy Pettitte’s next scheduled start has been pushed back a few days because the left-hander is experiencing back spasms.
