PORTLAND — The Maine Red Claws chose point guard Shelvin Mack with the fourth pick in the first round of the NBA D League draft Friday night.
Mack, 22, was a back-up in the NBA last year, with the Washington Wizards. He was cut by the Wizards before the 2012-13 season began.
Mack, 6-foot-3, was a freshman standout at Butler, leading the Bulldogs to the NCAA championship game. He opted for the NBA after his freshman year, and was chosen by Washington in the second round of the 2011 NBA draft.
Last season, Mack averaged 12 minutes a game, 3.6 points and 2.0 assists.
Before the draft, the Red Claws traded their third-round draft pick to the Reno Bighorns for veteran 6-10 post player Chris Ayer.
