Red Sox World Series trophies head to Maine

The trophies will be shown Saturday at Hadlock Field, then at L.L. Bean.

From staff reports

When Geoff Iacuessa, general manager of the Portland Sea Dogs, opened his computer on Halloween morning, the first message he saw had nothing to do with ghosts or goblins.

Have trophies, will travel

Boston’s 2004, 2007 and 2013 World Series trophies will visit Maine this weekend:

Hadlock Field, Portland: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

L.L. Bean, Freeport: 3 to 5 p.m.

Cross Insurance Center, Bangor: 10 a.m. to noon

Alfond Arena, Orono: 2 to 4 p.m.

The previous night the Red Sox had finished off the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 6 of the World Series and Iacuessa’s inquirer, at 5:30 a.m., wanted some information:

When is the World Series trophy coming up to Portland?

“For our fans, it’s something special,” Iacuessa said. “I’ve probably been asked about the trophies a hundred times since then.”

The gleaming hardware with the spiked flags will be on display for viewing and photographs Saturday at Hadlock Field. Coming to Maine is old hat for the World Series trophies of 2004 and 2007, but Saturday will mark the first local unveiling of the 2013 trophy.

The Sea Dogs will host a brief rally on the plaza in front of Hadlock Field beginning at 11 a.m. The expected guests include former senator George Mitchell; a Red Sox executive vice president, Dr. Charles Steinberg; and the Fenway Park public-address announcer, Dick Flavin.

Th two mascots, Slugger the Sea Dog and Wally the Green Monster, also will take part in the rally. The trophies will be available for viewing in the Portland Room beneath the first-base stands until 2 p.m.

“We’re excited,” Iacuessa said. “Especially in the middle of winter to think about baseball.”

A parade down Congress Street ushered the 2004 trophy into Portland. The 2007 celebration was lower key but still meaningful to many who had seen prospects rise through Boston’s Double-A affiliate before making it big at Fenway.

“I wondered if it was going to lose that luster after one championship,” Iacuessa said, “but with the anticipation for this – people keep asking us, ‘When are they coming?’ – it doesn’t seem like it has lost any luster. There’s still a lot of excitement for it.”

Iacuessa said he originally hoped the trophies would be part of last weekend’s Hot Stove Dinner, but their itinerary included California and Japan before returning to New England.

Following their appearance at Hadlock, the trophies are headed to Freeport for a stop at the L.L. Bean flagship store between 3 and 5 p.m. On Sunday, they will appear at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor from 10 a.m. to noon and at the University of Maine’s Alfond Arena in Orono from 2 to 4 p.m.
