OTTAWA, Ontario — Daniel Alfredsson scored an empty-net goal and added an assist in his return to Ottawa, and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Senators 4-2 on Sunday night.

Alfredsson, the former longtime captain of the Senators, wasn’t primarily responsible for Ottawa’s second straight loss and fourth consecutive at home, but he helped contribute to the continuation of his ex-team’s woes.

Like so many times in their previous 27 games in the post-Alfredsson era, something was missing for the Senators (10-13-4). Defensive breakdowns led to goals, and there wasn’t enough offense to compensate.

Drew Miller scored twice, Johan Franzen added a goal, and Jonas Gustavsson made 29 saves for Detroit.

Clarke MacArthur and Mika Zibanejad had goals for Ottawa.

The Senators were 0 for 4 on the power play

CANUCKS 3, HURRICANES 2: Ryan Kesler scored two goals to lead Vancouver to a win at Carolina.

Tom Sestito also scored for the Canucks and Jason Garrison had two assists. Backup goalie Eddie Lack made 29 saves to help Vancouver pick up just its third win in its past 11 games.

Kesler’s second goal capped a stretch where the teams combined to score three goals in 37 seconds.

Jordan Staal and Nathan Gerbe scored for Carolina. Cam Ward made 27 saves.

OILERS 3, STARS 2: Jordan Eberle and David Perron scored in the shootout, Devan Dubnyk came on in relief of injured goalie Ilya Bryzgalov and Edmonton won at Dallas.

The Stars were without their leading goal scorer, ex-Bruin Tyler Seguin, who may have suffered a concussion in Friday’s loss to Chicago.
