Road to Sochi: Bethel skier waits on Olympic berth

Troy Murphy will find out Tuesday if he’ll be on the U.S. moguls team.

From Staff Reports

Troy Murphy of Bethel will find out sometime early Tuesday if he’s going to be a member of the U.S. moguls team for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association will announce its nominations at noon Tuesday.

Murphy, flying back to Park City, Utah, said he had no contact with anyone from the USSA on Monday but that he wasn’t overly concerned.

The 21-year-old Gould Academy graduate put himself into contention with a fifth-place finish in the last Olympic qualifier Sunday in Val St. Come, Quebec. He didn’t learn he was competing in the race until Saturday morning and didn’t arrive in Quebec until 2 a.m. Sunday.

“I’m just super happy with my skiing considering the super crazy circumstances,’’ said Murphy in a phone interview while waiting for a flight in Atlanta. “I think I did pretty well, now I’ve just got my fingers crossed.’’

Two U.S. moguls skiers have met the qualifying standards: Patrick Deneen and Bradley Wilson.

Murphy skied in four Olympic qualifiers and finished fifth twice. That puts him in the third spot among America moguls skiers. But the USSA could decide to just bring Deneen and Wilson to the Olympics, opening a spot for someone in another freestyle discipline.

“I just think this helps me going forward,’’ said Murphy. “I don’t have any regrets. I made the World Cup and that was a huge goal of mine.’’
