Mark Rogers of Orrs Island was released by the Seattle Mariners after just two appearances with their Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma, Washington, the Mariners confirmed Monday night.

Rogers was signed as a free agent in January after he spent 10 injury-plagued years in the Milwaukee Brewers’ organization.

He was assigned to minor-league camp early in spring training and didn’t pitch for Tacoma until he made a four-inning relief appearance on April 27, allowing one run on three hits and two walks.

Rogers started Sunday’s game against Las Vegas and walked five in three innings, giving up two hits and two runs.

Rogers, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2004 draft, struggled to stay healthy during his time in Milwaukee’s organization and missed the 2007 and 2008 seasons. He made it to the majors as a September call-up in 2010 and pitched well in four appearances, allowing just two hits and two runs with 11 strikeouts in 10 innings. But he spent much of the 2011 season on the disabled list and pitched a total of just 441/3 innings in the minors.

In 2012, the Brewers called him up in late July and inserted him into the rotation. He was 3-1 with a 3.92 ERA in seven starts before Milwaukee shut him down for the season in September.

Rogers was expected to contend for a spot in the rotation in 2013 but experienced a mysterious drop in velocity during spring training and started the season on the disabled list. After 12 rehab appearances in the minors with a 5.16 ERA in 222/3 innings, he was removed from Milwaukee’s 40-man roster in September.

MARLINS: Pitcher Jose Fernandez says he’s fine and won’t miss a turn after being hit by a batted ball.

Fernandez was struck on the inside of the left thigh during Sunday’s 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Fernandez said he had a painful bruise, but that he was feeling better.

PIRATES: Pittsburgh promoted left-hander Jeff Locke from the minors and started him Monday night against San Francisco.

Locke was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and right-hander Casey Sadler was optioned to the minors.

Locke allowed six runs in 51/3 innings.

TWINS: First baseman Joe Mauer will miss at least one game with lower back spasms.

Mauer was taken out of Sunday’s win against Baltimore in the third inning when his back tightened. Manager Ron Gardenhire said Mauer has improved, but the team wants to give him some extra rest.

INDIANS: Right fielder Jay Bruce had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee and will be sidelined for about a month.
