SCARBOROUGH – Mike Giordano wasn’t out of coaching for long. He has been named the next Scarborough High girls’ basketball coach.

Giordano, who resigned recently after 17 seasons as the girls’ coach at South Portland, was confirmed by the Scarborough School Board on Thursday.

He will become the Red Storm’s fourth coach in four seasons, replacing Ron Cote, who resigned after one season because of health issues.

Giordano had a record of 206-124 at South Portland and led the Red Riots to the playoffs each of the last 13 seasons.

He was named the SMAA coach of the year last winter after leading South Portland to a 12-6 regular-season record. South Portland, which lost its leading scorer, Danica Gleason, to a knee injury midway through the season, was ousted in the Western Class A quarterfinals.

Giordano resigned in early April after receiving what he called “unfavorable reviews” in a year-end online survey of the team’s players conducted by Athletic Director Todd Livingston.

He leaves one of the SMAA’s top programs for another. The Red Storm won the 2009-10 Class A state championship. They advanced to the regional semifinals last winter and the regional final two years ago.
