Former Sox infielder to lead Scarborough clinics

Shea Hillenbrand, the former Boston Red Sox third baseman and 2002 All-Star, will conduct two baseball clinics at Maine Hits in Scarborough next Saturday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The 90-minute sessions will deal with the game and what it means to be a professional athlete.

The morning clinic is for ages 8-12, the afternoon clinic for ages 13-16. The cost is $30 per player. Hillenbrand is also available for private lessons. For further information call 730-7227.

Hillenbrand played seven seasons in the major leagues for six teams. He was a 2005 All-Star with the Toronto Blue Jays.

U.S. MEN’S CLAY COURT CHAMPIONSHIP: Nicolas Almagro and Fernando Verdasco set up an all-Spanish final in Houston.

The fourth-seeded Verdasco beat Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 7-5, and the third-seeded Almagro advanced when American Sam Querrey pulled out because of a back injury.

Almagro, a 12-time winner on the ATP World Tour ranked 20th in the world, reached the final for the second straight year. He lost the 2013 final to John Isner.

Verdasco has five career titles, all on clay.

KATOWICE OPEN: Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland was overcome by Alize Cornet of France 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals in Katowice, Poland. Cornet will face first-time WTA finalist Camila Giorgi of Italy.

GRAND PRIX HASSAN II: Fourth-seeded Marcel Granollers will face eighth-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in an all-Spanish final in Casablanca after both won their semifinals.

ARKANSAS DERBY: Ridden by Joe Bravo, Danza pulled away on the home stretch to shock a star-packed field, giving trainer Todd Pletcher his second straight victory in the $1 million race and earning 100 points in the Kentucky Derby standings.

INJURED: Spanish Vuelta champion Christopher Horner remains in a Milan hospital following Friday’s training accident in northern Italy.

Horner has been moved to the chest surgery department where he is undergoing drainage on a punctured lung. The 42-year-old American rider also has four broken ribs and cuts on his head.
