Scott leads McIlroy by two strokes after two rounds at Australian Open

Adam Scott held a two-shot advantage over Rory McIlroy as the tournament’s star players moved to the top of the Australian Open leaderboard at Sydney on Friday.

Scott shot a 2-under-par 70 for a two-round total of 12-under 132. McIlroy, playing in the morning and avoiding the rain and storms that later hit the course, had a 65.

Defending champion Schwartzel shot a second straight 4-under 68 to join Madsen with 8-under 136 totals.

WORLD CUP: Quick in training all week, Swiss star Lara Gut carried it over to race day. The 22-year-old Gut breezed to her second World Cup win of the season, taking the season-opening downhill at Beaver Lake, Colo., by holding off Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein by 0.47 seconds.

Lindsey Vonn is energized by her progress in recovering from a knee injury and might be in the starting gate next week in Canada.

Vonn spoke with reporters after three early super-G training runs. On her third and final run, after two cautious passes, she opened it up to see how her knee responded.

“So far, so good,” she said after her workout. Queried about her chances of racing in Alberta next week she said, “As it looks right now, yeah.”

MLB: Free agent left-hander Ted Lilly, 37, has retired. Lilly, a two-time All-Star, was in Venezuela attempting to regain his form and confidence after a medical procedure on his neck by a spine specialist, but called it quits after one outing.

Ryan Vogelsong is staying with the San Francisco Giants, agreeing to a one-year contract. Vogelsong was 4-6 with a 5.73 ERA in 19 starts in an injury-shortened season in 2013.

The journeyman pitcher became one of baseball’s feel-good comeback stories in 2011, when he made the All-Star team after joining the Giants as a fill-in for the injured Barry Zito.

The Los Angeles Dodgers avoided salary arbitration with three players, agreeing to one-year deals with left-hander Scott Elbert, 28, outfielder Mike Baxter, 28, and catcher Drew Butera, 30.

HIGH SCHOOLS

GIRLS’ HOCKEY: Mikaela Brown had two goals and an assist, and Erin Hubbard added a goal and an assist as Lewiston defeated Brunswick 4-0 at Watson Arena in Brunswick. Allison Frechette also scored, while Makaela Field, Mikaela St. Laurent and Faith Ide assisted for the Blue Devils (2-0).

Claire Mendes recorded 46 saves for the Dragons (0-2).
