The University of Maine begins its defense of the Colonial Athletic Association football title at home Aug. 30 against Norfolk State, who it defeated 23-6 in its season opener last year.

NFL: The Cleveland Browns signed free-agent quarterback Vince Young, Tennessee’s first-round pick of 2006 and a two-time Pro Bowler who hasn’t played in an NFL regular-season game since 2011.

Tight end Bear Pascoe, who made six starts for the New York Giants last season, signed with the Atlanta Falcons.

Quarterback Eli Manning will miss all of the New York Giants’ spring activities due to left ankle surgery.

New York City developer Howard Milstein, who co-owned the NHL’s New York Islanders from 1998-2000, expressed interest in buying the Buffalo Bills and keeping them in western New York.

As New York State Thruway chairman, Milstein has ties to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and also controls large undeveloped plots of land in Niagara Falls.

BASKETBALL

D-LEAGUE: Forward Chris Wright was named to the All-D-League second team after averaging 19.8 points and 8.1 rebounds over 41 games with the Maine Red Claws before finishing the season with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he averaged six points in eight games.

Other Maine honorees were guard Frank Gaines, honorable mention and all-rookie first team; center Zeke Marshall, all-rookie second team; and guard Chris Babb, all-rookie third team.

SOFTBALL

BOSTON COLLEGE 4, MAINE 3: Jordan Weed threw a complete game, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out six to lead the host Eagles (30-19) past the Black Bears (17-18).

Maine’s Emj Fogel was 1 for 3 with a run scored and a pair of RBI.

Hannah Hill took the loss, going five innings and allowing three earned runs.

TENNIS

PORTUGAL OPEN: Top seeds Tomas Berdych and Milos Raonic strolled into the quarterfinals at Oeiras.

Berdych opened his title bid with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Somdev Devvarman of India, while Raonic, of Canada, reached his fourth successive quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay.

In women’s quarterfinal play, top-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain beat Polona Hercog of Slovenia 6-1, 6-3 to reach the semifinals.

Also, second-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada lost 6-4, 6-1 to former French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova on the clay.

SOCCER

COPA AMERICA: The United States will host a special 16-nation edition of the Copa America in 2016, marking the soccer tournament’s centennial.

Possible sites include the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.; Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens; and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

OLYMPICS

WINTER GAMES: Krakow’s bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics took a new blow, with a survey showing that a majority of Poles oppose the project.

Krakow is competing with Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing; Lviv, Ukraine; and Oslo, Norway.
