PORTLAND — Quarterback Eric Christensen passed for one touchdown and ran for another to lead Thornton Academy to the state Class A football championship with a 37-23 win over Lawrence High of Fairfield Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Andrew Libby added two touchdowns for Thornton (11-1), which won its first state football title since 1988. Lawrence (10-2) led 17-16 at halftime after a 36-yard field goal by Chad Martin with 2.8 seconds left in the half.

Thornton scored two touchdowns in a 1:08 span in the third quarter. After stopping Libby for a yard loss on fourth-and-2, Lawrence fumbled on the next play with Cody Lynn recovering for the Golden Trojans. Christensen scored on a 30-yard run on the next play. The Bulldogs couldn’t move and punted. Libby returned the punt 48 yards for a touchdown. Libby’s 2-point rush made it 30-17.

Lawrence rallied to cut it to 30-23, but the Golden Trojans put it away on Libby’s 4-yard scoring run with 3:14 left.

Lawrence lost for the second consecutive year in the state final.
