Three American boats win openers at Henley Regatta

HENLEY, England — Three American boats won their opening races in the morning session on the first day of the prestigious Henley Regatta, held annually on the River Thames near London.

Columbia University had the first American crew in the water and beat a composite crew from Cambridge University's Caius and Lady Margaret Boat Clubs by half a length in the Temple Cup for student eights.

In the same event, Grand Valley State University from Allendale, Mich., lost to Oxford Brookes University by two-thirds of a length.

Boston College High School earned a convincing five-length victory over London's Emanuel School in the Princess Elizabeth Cup for schoolboy eights.

In the Thames Cup for club eights, Green Lake Crew from Seattle earned a two-length win over local club Twickenham, while Northeastern University Alumni lost by 4 ¾ lengths to English crew Royal Chester.

In the Prince Albert Cup for student coxed fours, Bowdoin College from Brunswick, Maine, lost by 2 ¼ lengths to Scottish champion Edinburgh University. The University of Virginia "A'' crew lost by half a length to Trinity College from Dublin.
