ORONO — The University of Maine rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a 3-3 overtime tie with Boston University before a crowd of 4,300 at Alfond Arena Friday night.

In the final six minutes of regulation, the Black Bears had a shot hit the post and saw an apparent game-winning goal disallowed after video review.

Maine (8-15-6 overall, 4-10-6 Hockey East) remains in ninth place in Hockey East, a point behind Massachusetts in the race for the final playoff berth. Boston University is 13-12-2 overall and 10-7-2 in conference play.

All three Black Bear goals came on the power play.

Freshman Steven Swavely, who hadn’t scored since opening night, notched the first two, late in the first and early in the second. He also assisted on a Joey Diamond goal nine minutes into the second period to give the Black Bears the lead.

Entering the weekend, Maine had converted only 13 of 133 power-play opportunities, a .098 success ratio.

BU tied it with a power-play goal by Ahti Oksanen eight minutes into the third.

Martin Ouellette made 23 saves for Maine. Matt O’Connor saved 33 for BU.

The Black Bears and BU play again Saturday night at 7, with NESN scheduled to broadcast the game.
