Unity Raceway cancels rest of the season

The raceway's manager says poor attendance and fewer drivers are the main reasons.

The Associated Press

UNITY — The manager of the Unity Raceway stock car track says the rest of the season has been canceled because of financial reasons.

George Fernald Jr., who leased the track from Ralph and Nancy Nason, said the only race still on is the John Late Model race scheduled for Oct. 14.

Racing had been scheduled for every weekend, except Sept. 29, leading up to the Long John weekend. There was also a race weekend in November and one in December.

Fernald had to stop paying purse money to the drivers earlier this month.

He said attendance was down and fewer drivers were turning out to race.

Fernald tells the Bangor Daily News he and his family have lost more than $30,000 the past five years.
