CUMBERLAND — Yarmouth scored two goals in the final 18 minutes Tuesday night to earn a 2-2 tie with Greely in a game between Western Class B boys’ soccer contenders at Hutchins Field.

“It was a great high school soccer game,” Yarmouth Coach Mike Hagerty said. “I thought the kids played as hard as they could. It gives us a lot to build on for the season. (The players) will know they’re never out of a game. They stuck with it and I’m really proud of the effort.”

Greely Coach Mike Andreasen was happy to walk off with a tie.

“We lost a 2-0 lead but looking at the general scheme of things, to get a draw I think both teams felt pretty fortunate,” he said.

Jacob Nason scored both goals for the Rangers (1-0-1).

His first goal came 11 minutes into the game on Greely’s second foray into the Yarmouth end. After getting control of a deflected ball near midfield, Nason squeezed through a seam between two defenders and rolled in a shot from 20 yards inside the right post as goalie Alex Lyon came off his line to challenge him.

The Clippers (1-0-1) held an 11-2 edge in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half, but the Rangers held the lead.

“For us it was getting our heads right,” Andreasen said. “We wanted to play like it was zero-zero.”

Greely came out much stronger in the second half. It moved into a 2-0 lead when Nason headed in Matt Crowley’s long direct kick in the 53rd minute.

“(Nason) gets about four good scoring chances all night and he scores on two of them,” Hagerty said. “That’s a pretty good player, right?”

At that point the Clippers appeared done, but instead dominated the rest of the game.

“We played well with a 1-0 lead,” Andreasen said. “With a 2-0 lead we didn’t. We really got back on our heels and (Yarmouth) really picked up the urgency.”

Wyatt Jackson, who had a goal waved off because of an offside call late in the first half, made it 2-1 in the 62nd minute when he poked in Ben Decker’s crossing pass from the right.

Less than eight minutes later, Ben Vigue stuck the ball inside the right post, getting a foot on a deflection after the ball pinballed in front following a corner kick.

“I thought our kids did a really nice job when we went down 2-0,” Hagerty said. “We have a lot of young kids who haven’t been in this type of game yet, so this was a really great early-season game.”

With less than two minutes left in the second overtime, Greely goalie Alex McAdoo, a converted midfielder who made 11 saves in his second varsity start, made a diving stop on Max Watson’s blast from the left side.
