With the impending blizzard expected to drop as much as 2 feet of snow in some parts of Maine, the high school state cheerleading and wrestling championships scheduled Saturday have been postponed, and many other local sports events also have been affected.

The wrestling championships were supposed to be held at the Augusta Civic Center, with all three classes competing simultaneously. Now the championship meets will be at three sites on Feb. 16, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Class A meet will be held at Sanford’s Memorial Gym, Class B will be at Fryeburg Academy and Class C will be at Foxcroft Academy.

Rich Buzzell, a member of the Maine Principals’ Association wrestling committee and the athletic director at defending Class A state champion Marshwood, said the extra week will be difficult for the wrestlers.

“I just got off the phone with (Marshwood Coach) Matt Rix and he said all the kids were pretty disappointed,” Buzzell said. “Everything had been planned to peak for this Saturday and now it’s a holding pattern.”

The cheerleading championships were moved to Monday at the Bangor Auditorium. Class C and D teams will compete at 4:30 p.m., followed by Class A and B at 6:30.
