HAMPDEN – Bradley Wilcox and Rem Poulin each scored a pair of goals Saturday to lead Bangor Christian to a 5-2 victory against Richmond and its second consecutive Class D boys’ soccer state championship.

Richmond took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal from freshman Nate Tribbett, but the Patriots tied the score on a fine individual effort from Wilcox with 43 seconds left in the half.

Bangor Christian (16-1-1) took the lead for good seven minutes into the second half when Poulin’s corner kick deflected into the goal off a Richmond defender.

“I think what happened on that own goal, it deflated us,” Richmond Coach Joe Scribellito said.

Wilcox scored his 44th goal of the season when he banged home a rebound to make it 3-1, and Poulin made it 4-1 when he drilled home a shot that had bounced off the post.

Tom Carter of the Bobcats cut the lead to 4-2 with 15 minutes left when he picked up a loose ball and scored from 15 yards.

The Patriots put the game away when Zach Sirois scored with three minutes left.

Richmond has won six consecutive Western Maine titles but has lost to Bangor Christian three times in the state final.

The Bobcats finished their season at 11-4-2.

GIRLS

RICHMOND 1, VAN BUREN 0: Danica Hurley’s second-half goal lifted Richmond over Van Buren in the Class D girls’ soccer championship game at Hampden.

Hurley took a through pass from sophomore Sadie Gosse, beat two defenders and went in alone on Crusaders goalie Ashely Wilson, beating her to the bottom left corner.

“I pretty much just used my speed to my advantage and dribbled through the last two defenders,” Hurley said. “It felt pretty good.”

The state championship was Richmond’s first since 2007.

Richmond finished at 15-1. Eastern Maine champion Van Buren closed at 12-5-1.

The Bobcats controlled most of the action in the second half, outshooting the Crusaders, 5-1. They held a 12-6 edge in shots for the game.

They also did a good job keeping Van Buren’s Parise Rossignol in check. The freshman striker scored 27 goals during the season but was held to two shots.

Richmond goalie Lyndsy Hoopingarner finished with six saves, including a volley off Rossignol’s foot in the first half from point-blank range.
