LEWISTON — Tyler Schlelch's goal to start the second half sparked Bates to a 3-1 victory against St. Joseph's in a men's soccer game Tuesday.
Trailing 1-0 at the half after a Teddy Palmer header, Bates (1-1) got goals from Schlelch, John Murphy and Ethan Hirshberg.
Kenny Grade collected seven saves to beat the Monks (1-3-1).
SMCC 4, CMCC 0: Peter Dore had a pair of goals as the Seawolves (2-1, 2-0 Yankee Small College) shut out the Mustangs (3-1, 3-1) at South Portland.
Wadhah Al-Shammari and Kyle Steifken also scored, and Kyle Ehlers had three assists.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
UNE 3, USM 1: Freshman Kristin Dechene scored her first two collegiate goals to lead the Nor'easters (2-3) tover the Huskies (1-4) at Biddeford.
Dechene collected a long pass from Nicole Faircloth and lofted a shot from the edge of the box to give UNE a 2-1 halftime lead.
Kelly Burrell scored for USM, which had an own goal early in the game.
SMCC 6, CMMC 1: Michela Desjardins scored three goals and assisted on two others asthe Seawolves (2-1) won at South Portland.
FOOTBALL
MAINE: Defensive end Michael Cole, who had two sacks and forced a fumble in Maine's 34-3 loss to Boston College on Saturday, was named the College Football Performance Awards FCS National Defensive Player of the Week and National Defensive Lineman of the Week.
Cole is a junior from North Brunswick, N.J.
Sophomore punter Jeffrey Ondish, of Elkton, Md., was named honorable mention CFPA Punter of the Week.
HARVARD: Men's basketball co-captain Kyle Casey plans to withdraw from school amid a cheating scandal that also may involve other athletes, according to reports.
Co-captain Brandyn Curry also has been implicated in the scandal.
The Boston Herald reported Curry also is expected to withdraw from classes.
