STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Maine advanced to the championship round of the America East Conference baseball tournament Thursday with an 8-1 victory over top-seeded Stony Brook.

Michael Fransoso hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and Alex Calbick had a grand slam in the eighth for the second-seeded Black Bears (31-22).

Jeffrey Gibbs held the Seawolves (42-11) to one hit in six innings and got the win. He walked five and struck out four. Shaun Coughlin pitched three hitless innings for the save.

Maine led 2-1 before Taylor Lewis singled and scored on Fransoso’s homer to right in the bottom of the fifth. Calbick’s home run in the eighth scored Fransoso, Joey Martin and Justin Leisenheimer.

Fransoso finished with three hits and three RBI. Calbick knocked in five runs.

Stony Brook faces No. 4 Albany at 11 a.m. today in an elimination game. Maine is scheduled to play the winner at 3 p.m.

Albany stayed alive by eliminating third-seeded Binghamton 4-1 earlier Thursday.
