Maine Colleges: Black Bears edge UConn in women's hockey, 3-2

ORONO - Brianne Kilgour scored two goals and set up another as the University of Maine women's hockey team picked up its first win of the season Sunday, 3-2 over Connecticut.

All three Maine goals came in the final six minutes of the first period, after Connecticut (1-5-1, 1-1 Hockey East) took a 1-0 lead.

Kilgore tied it with an assist from Katy Massey, then put the Black Bears (1-3, 1-1) ahead with 1:45 left in the period. Brittany Dougherty, who assisted on the second goal, make it 3-1 with 16 seconds remaining.

Brittany Ott finished with 25 saves to earn the win.

FIELD HOCKEY

MAINE 2, HOFSTRA 1: Annabelle Hamilton scored on a reverse stick from the top of the left circle with 4:29 left in regulation to give the Black Bears (10-8) a nonconference win over the Pride (6-10) at Orono.

Maine opened the scoring on a goal by Cassidy Svetek 7:31 into the game, assisted by Holly Stewart.

Krizia Layne tied it for Hofstra on a tip-in off a penalty corner 4:12 into the second half.

Alicia Frisch made one save for the Black Bears.

ST. JOSEPH'S 6, COLBY-SAWYER 0: Carley Denis scored a pair of goals and Amanda Celata collected a goal and an assist as the Monks (9-5, 5-4 North Atlantic) cruised to a win over the Chargers (5-8, 1-7) at Standish.

Theresa Hendrix opened the scoring for the Monks in the 15th minute. Rachelle Messuri added a goal less than five minutes later, and Allyson Allard and Denis scored less than four minutes apart late in the half to extend the lead to 4-0.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

AMERICA EAST: Maine is the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament and will get a bye into the semifinals.

The Black Bears (7-6-3, 3-3-2) will host a semifinal at 1 p.m. Sunday against the winner of a quarterfinal between Stony Brook and New Hampshire.

The championship game is Nov. 4 at the highest remaining seed. Hartford goes into the tournament as the No. 1 seed.
