DELAND, Fla. – A second-half rally fell short as the University of Maine women’s basketball team suffered a 54-51 defeat against Winthrop in the Stetson Classic on Monday.

The Black Bears (1-9) whittled down a nine-point halftime deficit and pulled to within three of the Eagles (3-6) before Tanna Ross bounced a tying 3-pointer off the rim in the final seconds.

Ashleigh Roberts led Maine with 16 points. Katelyn Vanderhoff added 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Dequesha McClanahan had 17 points and seven assists for Winthrop.

 

(14) IOWA 75, DRAKE 71: Kachine Alexander scored a season-high 26 points and Iowa (11-1) snuck past Drake (5-5) at Des Moines, Iowa, to give Coach Lisa Bulder her 200th win with the Hawkeyes.

Kamille Wahlin and Jaime Printy each added 13 points for Iowa, which blew an 11-point lead but recovered for its ninth straight win over the Bulldogs.

 

(17) NOTRE DAME 94, VALPARAISO 43: Natalie Novosel scored 18 points to help visiting Notre Dame (9-3) rout Valparaiso (2-9).

 

(21) IOWA STATE 93, CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 47: Kelsey Bolte scored 16 points and Iowa State (8-2) held Cal State Northridge (0-12) to five field goals in the first half en route to a victory at Ames, Iowa.

(1) DUKE 98, ELON 72: Kyle Singler scored 24 points to help Duke (11-0) beat Elon (4-7) at Durham, N.C., moving Coach Mike Krzyzewski into a tie for second place with Dean Smith on the all-time wins list.

Nolan Smith added 22 points as the Blue Devils gave Krzyzewski his 879th win in 36 seasons at Duke and Army. Bobby Knight heads the list with 902 wins.

Andre Dawkins scored 17 for Duke.

 

(4) UCONN 76, COPPIN STATE 64: Kemba Walker scored 20 points and Connecticut (9-0) ended a 12-day break for final exams by beating Coppin State (4-4) at Hartford, Conn.

Freshman Jeremy Lamb added 16 points, and Alex Oriakhi had 12 points and seven rebounds for UConn, which led 38-21 at halftime and was up 25 early in the second half.

(5) SYRACUSE 97, MORGAN STATE 55: James Southerland had a career-high 18 points off the bench, Rick Jackson added 18 points and nine rebounds, and Syracuse (12-0) beat visiting Morgan State (4-5).

 

(16) MEMPHIS 68, TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI 63: Joe Jackson scored a career-high 23 points and Memphis (9-1) got past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-7) at Memphs, Tenn.

Hollis Hill had 16 points to lead the Islanders.

 

JACKSONVILLE 71, (20) FLORIDA 68: Freshman Keith McDougald scored 18 points, including four free throws late in overtime, leading Jacksonville (7-3) to an upset of Florida (8-3) at Gainesville, Fla.

McDougald hit both ends of a 1-and-1 with 31.8 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Dolphins a 69-66 lead.
