ORONO – Katelyn Vanderhoff scored the final eight points of the game for the University of Maine as the women’s basketball team closed out the game on a 10-1 run to earn a 65-56 victory over Vermont on Sunday.

Vanderhoff finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, six steals and four assists for the Black Bears (4-22, 2-12 America East), who trailed the Catamounts (5-23, 5-10) by as many as 10 points early in the second half.

Samantha Baranowski added a season-high 11 points for Maine and Ashleigh Roberts finished in double figures for the sixth straight game with 10 points.

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 76, CENTRAL MAINE CC 67: Christina Ricci scored 24 points and Jessica Truman added 21 to lift the second-seeded Seawolves to a win over the top-ranked Mustangs in the championship game of the Yankee Small College Conference tournament at South Portland.

The Seawolves advanced to the USCAA national tournament in Uniontown, Pa.

(3) STANFORD 67, (9) UCLA 53: In Los Angeles, Chiney Ogwumike scored 18 points and Stanford (24-2, 15-0 Pac-10) beat UCLA (22-3, 12-2) for its 18th straight victory.

(6) XAVIER 77, DUQUESNE 51: In Cincinnati, Ta’Shia Phillips and Amber Harris had double-doubles and Xavier (23-2, 12-0 Atlantic 10) beat Duquesne (20-7, 7-5) to move back into a tie with Temple for first in the Atlantic 10.

(7) DUKE 90, VIRGINIA TECH 40: Jasmine Thomas scored a season-high 27 points to help host Duke (24-3, 10-2 ACC) beat Virginia Tech (11-16, 1-11).

(11) MICHIGAN STATE 69, ILLINOIS 56: Kalisha Keane scored 27 points and visiting Michigan State (24-3, 12-2 Big Ten) beat Illinois (7-20, 2-12) to clinch a share of the Big Ten title.

(10) DEPAUL 82, (18) GEORGETOWN 57: Sam Quigley scored 14 points to lead six DePaul (25-3, 12-1 Big East) players in double figures as the Blue Demons beat Georgetown (20-7, 8-5) in Chicago.

(15) FLORIDA STATE 72, (16) MARYLAND 66: Cierra Bravard and Chelsea Davis each scored 14 points to lead a balanced Florida State offense and the host Seminoles (22-5, 10-2 ACC) beat Maryland (21-6, 7-5).

(19) KENTUCKY 80, VANDERBILT 71: Keyla Snowden had 22 points, including four 3-pointers, to help Kentucky (20-7, 9-5 SEC) win at Vanderbilt (18-9, 9-5) for the first time in 25 years.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

(11) PURDUE 76, (2) OHIO STATE 63: E’Twaun Moore scored a career-high 38 points to lead host Purdue (22-5, 11-3 Big Ten) past Ohio State (25-2, 12-2).

(5) DUKE 79, GEORGIA TECH 57: Nolan Smith scored 28 points and Duke (25-2, 12-1 ACC) made its case to return to the top of the national rankings by routing Georgia Tech (11-15, 3-9).

(10) WISCONSIN 76, PENN STATE 66: Keaton Nankivil scored 22 points to lead host Wisconsin (20-6, 10-4 Big Ten) over Penn State (14-12, 7-8).

(14) FLORIDA 68, LSU 61: Erving Walker and Kenny Boynton each scored 17 points and visiting Florida (21-5, 10-2 SEC) moved back into a tie for the overall SEC lead by knocking off LSU (10-17, 2-10).

(23) TEMPLE 66, SAINT JOSEPH’S 52: Lavoy Allen scored 14 points for the Owls (21-5, 11-2 Atlantic 10) in their ninth straight win over their city-rival Hawks (7-19, 2-10).

BASEBALL

UNLV 8, MAINE 2: Brandon Bayardi hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning and Tyler Iodence allowed just three hits over eight innings to lead the Rebels (4-0) past the Black Bears (0-4) at Las Vegas.

Joey Martin had a triple, a run scored and an RBI for Maine.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

HOLY CROSS 7, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: Jocelyn Kratchmer and Nicola Garat scored two goals apiece as the Crusaders (16-9, 13-5) cruised past the Huskies (7-16-1, 5-12-1) in their ECAC East regular season finale at Worcester, Mass.
