ORONO – Terren Hall singled to drive in Alex Souhlaris with the winning run in the ninth inning as the University of Maine beat Maryland-Baltimore County 8-7 in an America East softball game Sunday.

Hall also homered and finished with three hits and four RBI for the Black Bears (20-22, 9-3 America East), and Kali Burnham added a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

After the Retrievers (22-21, 3-9) took an early 6-0 lead, the Black Bears tied it with a six-run fourth inning.

BASEBALL

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS COLBY: Chris Campbell hit a two-run single in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and the Monks (28-10) held on for a 4-2 win over the Mules (11-12) in the opening game at Standish.

Pat Moran added a solo home run for the Monks and closed out the game giving up one unearned run in 21/3 innings to earn the win. Colby was led by Nikolas Atsalis with two hits.

In Game 2, Mike Burdin hit a two-run double in a four-run second inning and St. Joseph’s went on to down the Mules, 6-4.

Todd Keneborus and Mike Pratt added two hits and two RBI apiece for the Monks, who led 5-0 after two innings.

Jake Kramer went 2 for 2 with two RBI and a run scored to pace the Mules.

USM 22, UMASS-BOSTON 15: Nick Grady and Collin Henry combined for eight hits and nine RBI as the Huskies (17-13, 6-3 Little East) outlasted the Beacons (17-12, 4-5) at Waltham, Mass.

Grady had a two-run triple and a two-run homer, and Henry had a pair of doubles as USM recorded 19 hits.

The Huskies put away the Beacons by scoring six runs in the seventh inning, featuring Grady’s two-run triple and a two-run single by Mike Eaton, who also had a two-run double in the ninth.

MAINE 4, HARTFORD 3: Michael Fransoso hit a bases-loaded single to drive in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, leading the Black Bears (23-16, 7-3 America East) over the Hawks (8-24, 2-8) at Orono.

Justin Latta earned the win with 12/3 innings of no-hit relief. Joey Martin led Maine with two hits, including a double, and scored one run.

NAVY PREP SWEEPS SMCC: The Seawolves (19-20) were shut out 4-0 in the opener, then lost 9-7 in Game 2 against Navy Prep at South Portland.

Ryan Lailer pitched an eight-hitter and allowed three earned runs for the Seawolves in the first game, and Charles Boettcher had a two-run double in the second game.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

USM 13, UMASS-DARTMOUTH 9: Mary Vaughan scored a season-high six goals for the Huskies (7-8, 1-3 Little East), who had eight consecutive goals in the second half to pull away from the Corsairs (4-6, 1-3) at Gorham.

Jessica Knight added four goals and one assist for Southern Maine.

MEN’S LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH’S 8, LYNDON STATE 7: Spencer Hunt scored the winner with 9:05 left in regulation and Christopher Driscoll finished with a school-record 23 saves as the Monks (8-7, 4-4 North Atlantic) edged the Hornets (3-8, 2-6) at Lyndon, Vt.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

OREGON: Multiple media outlets are reporting Creighton Coach Dana Altman has agreed to take over at Oregon.

Fox Sports was the first to report Altman had been hired to replace Ernie Kent, who was dismissed last month after 13 seasons with his alma mater.
