BRUNSWICK - One week after rushing for over 400 yards and five touchdowns, Brunswick's Jared Jensen was again the man of the hour Friday, running for 283 yards and four scores as the Dragons beat Skowhegan 36-14 in an Eastern Class A football game.
The Indians concentrated on stopping Jensen, but like Bangor a week earlier, they didn't have much success.
"Skowhegan's huge," said Jensen. "We knew they were tough, but adversity brings out our best.
"They put five guys on the side we were running to, but the line still opened up some big holes. It was huge."
The Dragons (2-0) scored on their first three possessions on the way to a 21-8 halftime lead.
After Brunswick's Nick Mrvichin recovered a Skowhegan fumble at the Skowhegan 40, it took the Dragons just two plays to convert. Both were Jensen carries, the second for 26 yards as he burst up the middle, broke a tackle, cut to the left and went the distance. Jason Carter's kick was good, and the Dragons were up 7-0 just 2:09 in.
Carter's 1-yard keeper capped a 13-play, 87-yard drive that made it 14-0. Jensen had a 42-yard run to set up the score.
Held to just 20 yards on the ground in the opening half, the Indians went to the air with some success, as Adam Clukey was 13 of 17 passing for 141 yards. He hit Owen Mercier for a 4-yard TD to put Skowhegan on the board, then ran in the conversion to cut the deficit to 14-8.
But Brunswick answered with a 65-yard drive in seven plays.
Carter found Lucas McCue down the right sideline for a 31-yard connection on his first pass of the game, and Jensen followed with a 15-yard touchdown run.
The Dragons opened the second half with a 56-yard scoring drive set up by McCue's kickoff return. Jensen carried the ball on four of the six plays, and dove in at the pylon after going the final 11 yards around the left side.
Clukey scored on a 10-yard keeper for Skowhegan (1-1), but Brunswick added to its lead when Logan Tupper blocked a punt, the ball going through the end zone for a safety that made it 29-14.
Jensen, whose carries were limited after he suffering a leg cramp, closed out the scoring with a 20-yard run after he appeared to be stopped at the line of scrimmage.
"I though our defense did a real solid job," said Brunswick Coach Dan Cooper. "We limited the big plays and bent but didn't break. I thought our lines won most of their battles."
