BOSTON – The Boston Red Sox put pitcher Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained neck.

The Red Sox made the move Tuesday after beating Tampa Bay 5-1 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. Buchholz threw for a brief period in the bullpen following the game.

Buchholz is 9-0 and leads the majors with a 1.71 ERA.

Buchholz made an early exit from his latest start June 8 against the Angels. The Red Sox said they didn’t want to take any chances with Buchholz and put him on the DL retroactive to June 9.

Boston filled Buchholz’s spot on the 25-man roster by recalling catcher Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Pawtucket.
