PORTLAND – Junior quarterback Jordan Talbot threw four touchdowns passes, and running backs Justin Zukowski and Ronald Hargrove each scored two touchdowns and rushed for over 100 yards as Portland rolled over Edward Little 45-7 in an Eastern Class A football game Friday night at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
It was the second straight game scoring 45 points for Portland (2-1), which plays next Saturday afternoon at Bangor.
Hargrove rushed for 162 yards on eight carries. Zukowski — tied for the Eastern Class A lead in rushing in going into the game with 446 yards — had 123 yard on 13 carries.
The Bulldogs made a few mistakes early, resulting in a slow start, but once they got rolling the points came fast.
“The line blocked great,” said Talbot, in his first season as a varsity quarterback. “The amount of fakes we have in our offense is what makes it go. We have a lot of weapons and we have excellent speed. I love running this offense.”
The Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead with 1:34 left in the first quarter as Talbot, a left-hander, threw a swing pass to Zukowski, who scored from the 2.
Hargrove, a transfer from Massachusetts, scored on a 15-yard run to make it 12-0 with 5:51 left in the half. Then, just over a minute before intermission, Talbot tossed a 19-yard scoring pass to a wide-open Domenic Fagone in the end zone to make it 18-0.
The Bulldogs scored on their opening drive of the second half as Jayvon Pitts-Young, another of the team’s many speedsters, went 42 yards for the touchdown.
Talbot threw an 8-yard scoring pass to Zukowski, and the Bulldogs were finally successful with a Talbot placement to make it 31-0 midway in the third.
Hargrove scored his second touchdown on a 23-yard run and Talbot’s point after increased the lead to 38-0 with 5:13 left in the third.
The Red Eddies then got on the scoreboard as quarterback Ian Mileikis moved his team downfield with his arm. He passed to Hunter Martin for an 18-yard touchdown at the end of the quarter.
Talbot threw his fourth touchdown pass — and second to Fagone — on a 26-yard play early in the fourth quarter.
“Jordan opened it up with his passing,” said Portland Coach Jim Hartman. “He played well.
“We did have too many penalties and dropped balls and we’re going to have to correct that. We have great athletes and they’re learning. They really want to do well.”
