Soccer Roundup: Capers turn back Red Riots' upset bid

CAPE ELIZABETH - Kathryn Clark scored from Maddie Riker five minutes into the second half to give fourth-seeded Cape Elizabeth a 2-1 win over No. 13 South Portland in a Western Class A girls' soccer preliminary game Friday night.

Abby Wood started the scoring for Cape Elizabeth (13-1-1) just two minutes into the game. Ericka Lightner tied it for South Portland (5-10) with 10 minutes left in the first half. Genesee Bradbury assisted.

SANFORD 1, MARSHWOOD 0: Ali Legere scored with 9:47 left in the first half as the sixth-seeded Spartans (11-3-1) held on to beat the 11th-seeded Hawks (6-8-1) in a Western Class A prelim at Sanford.

Hannah Kallis set up the goal, dribbling down the right side and sending a pass to Legere, who knocked it to the ground and put it into the upper corner.

The Spartans got strong defensive support from sweeper Heather Leblanc and outside wing Sam Andrews, while goalie Kellie Tovey made six saves, including punching a free kick out of bounds in the final minute.

Macy Morrison made 19 saves for the Hawks.

FREEPORT 1, SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 0: Brooke Heathco scored on a direct kick from 20 yards five minutes into the second half to lift the eighth-seeded Falcons (7-7-1) over the ninth-seeded Phoenix (6-8-1) in a Western Class B prelim at Freeport.

GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 3, LAKE REGION 0: Maria Valente had a goal and an assist, and Julia Martell contributed two assists to help the sixth-seeded Patriots (5-6-4) beat the No. 11 Lakers in a Western Class B preliminary at Gray.

Kaelyn Woods put Gray-New Gloucester ahead in the first half. Haylee Cote and Valente added second-half goals.

SACOPEE VALLEY 1, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 0: Brooke Totman scored on an assist from Courtney Ryan with two minutes left in the second overtime as the 10th-seeded Hawks (7-4-4) beat the No. 7 Seagulls (8-3-4) in a Western Class C prelim at Old Orchard Beach.

OCEANSIDE 2, GARDINER 1: Makenna Brooks converted her second penalty kick of the game less than a minute into overtime to lift the fifth-seeded Mariners (10-3-2) over the No. 12 Tigers (7-8) in an Eastern Class B prelim at Rockland.

Kylee Granholm scored for Gardiner on a penalty kick in the first half. Brooks evened it with about 14 minutes left in regulation.

BOYS

OCEANSIDE 3, OLD TOWN 2: Lars Feuerlein assisted on two goals by Drew Townsend and scored the winner with 14 minutes remaining as the 11th-seeded Mariners (7-7-1) overcame a 2-0 deficit against the sixth-seeded Coyotes (8-6-1) in an Eastern Class B prelim at Old Town.
