Field Hockey: Cheverus advances to semis with win

PORTLAND - Elyse Caiazzo had a goal and an assist Tuesday to lead second-seeded Cheverus to a 2-1 victory against seventh-ranked Gorham in a Western Class A field hockey quarterfinal.

Caiazzo scored from Emily Rodrigue after about 10 minutes and assisted Katie Roy two minutes later for the Stags (14-1).

Jaime Hansen scored from Evelyn Viernes with 14:17 left for Gorham (9-7).

Libby DesRuisseaux made two saves for the win. Patti Smith stopped 11 shots for Gorham, including a late penalty stroke.

 

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 3, CAPE ELIZABETH 1: Three players scored for the second-seeded Raiders (13-2) against the seventh-ranked Capers in a Western Class B quarterfinal at Fryeburg.

Courtney Bartlett got the first goal from Kylie Lock on a penalty corner after three minutes.

Christina DiPietro also scored on a penalty corner from Makayla Frost with 7:15 left in the half.

Skye Dole got the final goal when she put in a rebound of her own shot that hit the post with 8:42 left in the game.

Hannah Newhall tipped in a pass across the goal mouth by Lauren Steidl with just under two minutes to go in the first half for the Capers.

Sage Antolin made four saves for the win. Julianne Ayers made 10 saves for Cape, including a stop of a penalty stroke late in the first half.

 

LEAVITT 1, FALMOUTH 0: Sadie Royer scored off a rebound after eight minutes and the third-seeded Hornets (12-3) went on to down sixth-ranked Falmouth (9-5-2) in a Western Class B quarterfinal at Turner.

 

MESSALONSKEE 11, OXFORD HILLS 0: Kristy Bernatchez scored six goals to lead the second-seeded Eagles (13-2) over the seventh-ranked Vikings (5-9-1) in an Eastern Class A quarterfinal at Waterville.
