Todd Wing, who has been an assistant basketball coach at Deering High for the last five seasons, was named the head coach of the Rams, replacing Dan LeGage, who resigned last month after 11 seasons and two state titles.
“I’m pretty excited,” said Wing, who teaches physical education at the elementary school level in Windham.
Wing will have material to work with even though the Rams are graduating four starters from a team that went 15-4 and was seeded second in the Western Class A tournament.
“I think we have some talent in the program,” said Wing. “Counting varsity, (junior varsity) and the freshman team, we were 54-9 this past season.”
Returning varsity players who got a lot of playing time are starter Ahmed Ahmed, Liam Densmore and 6-foot-6 Ahmed Ali. Chhorda Chhorn will return for his senior year after missing this past season with an ACL injury from football. Chhorn was a starting point guard as a sophomore on Deering’s 2012 state champion. Also returning is 6-5 center/forward Kyle Richards, who will be a senior.
Prior to Deering, Wing was an assistant men’s basketball coach at St. Joseph’s College.
