Football Roundup: Dirigo holds on to oust Seagulls

DIXFIELD - Nick Young scored on a 91-yard run in the third quarter Friday night, and third-seeded Dirigo held on for a 19-14 victory against sixth-seeded Old Orchard Beach in a Western Class C football quarterfinal.

Young's run gave the Cougars (7-2) a 19-7 lead against the Seagulls (6-3).

Trailing 13-0 at halftime, Old Orchard cut the deficit to 13-7 in the third quarter on a 50-yard run by Joey Gildart and an extra-point kick by James Strohm.

Bryan Roberts added a 10-yard touchdown run for the Seagulls with nine minutes left in the game, and Strohm added the kick to cut the lead to 19-14.

 

YORK 43, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 0: Sean Kelly rushed for two touchdowns and Ross Hogan threw for two more as the third-seeded Wildcats (7-2) rolled past the sixth-ranked Falcons (3-6) in a Western Class B quarterfinal at York.

Thomas Kinton and Jack Neary also ran for touchdowns for York, which led 28-0 at the half. Wes Warner and Mark MacGlashing made touchdown catches.

 

LAWRENCE 21, MESSALONSKEE 0: Spencer Carey threw long touchdown passes to Anthony Sementelli and Jake Doolan in the first half, and Lawrence (9-0) finished a perfect regular season for the sixth time in seven seasons by defeating Messalonskee (6-3) at Fairfield.

The teams will meet again next week at Fairfield in the semifinals of the Eastern Class A playoffs.

 

CONY 31, OXFORD HILLS 14: Chandler Shostak returned an interception 56 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter and Cony (7-2) went on to down Oxford Hills (3-6) at South Paris.

The return gave Cony a 27-14 lead and helped clinch the No. 2 seed for the Rams in the Eastern Class A playoffs. The Rams will be home next weekend against third-seeded Brunswick.

 

MT. BLUE 14, MT. DESERT ISLAND 13: Bradley Jackson knocked down a pass on a 2-point conversion with 3:41 left, and top-seeded Mt. Blue (9-0) survived a challenge from the eighth-seeded Trojans (4-5) in an Eastern Class B quarterfinal at Farmington.

Mt. Blue will be home against Gardiner in the semifinals.
