Don't overlook the Storm

Scarborough reaches 3-1 by using a passing game to hand Biddeford its first setback.

BIDDEFORD - If any doubt about the Scarborough football team lingered, Friday night's victory should help it disappear.

Behind quarterback Jack Adams, the Red Storm overpowered previously undefeated Biddeford en route to a 21-9 victory in a Western Class A game at Waterhouse Field.

"This was a huge win," said Adams. "We knew they were going to come out fired up and we had to come out just as fired up. We shut them down and came out with the win."

Adams passed for 318 yards and three touchdowns for the Red Storm (3-1).

His longest came late in the fourth quarter, 84 yards to Kyle Kelley. Biddeford's defender slipped, allowing the 6-foot-1 Kelley to haul in the pass and scamper in.

"Coach just wanted me to throw it to Kyle and hopefully he would get a chance to bring it down," said Adams. "When I dropped back and saw him even with the guy, I knew he was faster than him and could get by him so I just threw it."

The score, which came after two botched plays resulted in a loss of 14 yards, gave Scarborough some much-needed room with 3:26 remaining.

On the ensuing possession, three Tyler Audie passes and a 13-yard carry by Nick Gagne brought the Tigers (3-1) quickly into scoring position. But Will Lynch intercepted Audie's pass on the goal line to seal it.

The Tigers hurt themselves throughout with fumbles and penalties.

"It's a simple game," said Biddeford Coach Scott Descoteaux. "It's about blocking and tackling and not turning the ball over. When you do, it's a lack of concentration and focus and that costs you games. We had too many of those tonight."

Scarborough scored its second touchdown in similar fashion to its last. On the Red Storm's second play of the possession, Joe Viola hauled in an Adams pass and went on to score on a 75-yard play early in the fourth period.

The score gave the Red Storm their first lead of the game at 14-7.

"When our main back, (Zach) Bean, was out, we knew we had to step up and throw the ball," said Adams. "I love throwing to my big, tall, fast receivers because I know they are going to bring it down for me."

Adams found Mike Cyr to score Scarborough's first touchdown of the game midway through the third quarter.

Adams completed passes of 3 and 11 yards to Viola to start the drive, followed by two short carries that brought the Red Storm to the Biddeford 20.

From there, Adams passed down the middle to Cyr, who split two Biddeford defenders to haul in the touchdown.

"Jack didn't look so good throwing the ball at the beginning of the game," said Scarborough Coach Lance Johnson.

"Just when it looked like momentum was going to swing their way, we spread it back out and Jack did a great job throwing the ball."

A second-quarter interception by Audie at the Scarborough 30 set up Biddeford's only score. Gagne essentially completed the drive on his own, recording consecutive runs of 19, 5 and 2 yards before scoring from 3 yards.

The Tigers also recorded a safety with seconds remaining in the game.
