EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The New York Giants suddenly have added concern at defensive end.

With Jason Pierre-Paul still recovering from back surgery in early June, the Giants practiced Wednesday with fellow defensive end Justin Tuck sidelined by an undisclosed back problem.

“He’s got a tight back,” Coach Tom Coughlin said after practice without being specific. “They’re just taking the precautions.”

Coughlin hopes that Tuck will be able to play Saturday night in New York’s exhibition opener at Pittsburgh, but added his condition needs to improve a little.

Bothered by a number of injuries, including a neck problem, Tuck had an offseason in 2012, finishing with four sacks and 55 tackles in 55 games. As the team’s defensive captain he took a lot of criticism when the Giants finished next-to-last in the league in defense.

BROWNS: Running back Trent Richardson won’t play in the exhibition opener Thursday night against St. Louis as he continues to recover from an injured right shin.

Richardson was accidentally kicked in the shin — the same one he hurt in spring practice — last week and the Browns won’t risk him hurting it further.

“We’re going to be smart,” Coach Rob Chudzinski said.

COWBOYS: Brandon Moore, a former New York Jets offensive lineman, backed out of a deal with Dallas and plans to retire.

Moore, a 10-year veteran, called the team with a change of heart after agreeing to a deal Tuesday night, Coach Jason Garrett said. Dallas is looking for an experienced player at guard because of injuries to last year’s starters, Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau.

“He decided when he woke up this morning that he didn’t want to play football anymore,” Garrett said. “So we respect that decision.”

SEAHAWKS: A pair of minor injuries will keep James Carpenter and Bruce Irvin from suiting up Thursday night in the exhibition opener against San Diego.

The Seahawks have been excited throughout training camp at the promise shown by both of their former first-round selections but are eager to see it translate to game action.

Carpenter hasn’t been able to practice the last few days after suffering a foot sprain and Irvin has also missed practices this week because of a groin issue. Coach Pete Carroll didn’t provide many details as to which players will play against the Chargers, but did say neither Carpenter nor Irvin will be able to go.

JAGUARS: Jacksonville was awarded fourth-year receiver Charly Martin off waivers from San Francisco, filling the team’s final roster spot.

Martin has five receptions for 48 yards in 12 career games. He has spent time with San Diego, Carolina (2009-10), Seattle (2012-13) and San Francisco (2013), and was on Jacksonville’s practice squad for the final four weeks in 2011.

The Jaguars picked him up in time for the team’s first preseason game Friday against Miami. Jacksonville will be without starters Cecil Shorts III (calf) and Justin Blackmon, who is on the physically unable to perform list following groin surgery last month.

SAINTS: Receiver Joseph Morgan and defensive end Kenyon Coleman are out for the season, depriving New Orleans of a top deep threat and a veteran run-stopper.

Morgan hurt his left knee in Saturday’s scrimmage, and Coach Sean Payton said his diagnosis came back as a torn meniscus and partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament. Coleman tore a pectoral muscle.

“Obviously they are losses,” Payton said. “We have to find some guys to step up and take their spot.”

DOLPHINS: Receiver Mike Wallace returned to practice after being sidelined more than a week by a groin injury and expects to play in Friday’s exhibition game at Jacksonville.

Wallace caught a long touchdown pass in practice from Ryan Tannehill, their first such connection in training camp.

“Finally got one,” Wallace said. “It’s just the start. I plan on catching a lot of those. It’s just a matter of time. Be patient. It’s going to happen.”

BEARS: Veteran cornerback Kelvin Hayden will miss the entire season after tearing his left hamstring in practice Saturday.

Hayden will have surgery to repair the hamstring and need 6 to 8 months of rehab.

Hayden, 30, has 12 career interceptions.

JETS: Quarterback Mark Sanchez said he “earned the right to start” the exhibition opener Friday night at Detroit.

Sanchez, in a tightly contested competition with rookie Geno Smith, said he thinks he’s putting together a good training camp and never thinks about not playing, even in the preseason.

“You have to ask the coaches but I feel I’m putting together a good camp,” Sanchez said.

BILLS: Buffalo signed free- agent defensive back Mark LeGree to fill the roster spot left open following Mana Silva’s unexcused departure.

LeGree has yet to play in the NFL after being selected by Seattle in the fifth round of the 2011 draft out of Appalachian State. He was cut by the Seahawks before the start of his rookie season.

FLORIDA PROSECUTORS dropped child-abuse charges against a former Miami receiver, Mark Duper.

Prosecutors in Jacksonville, Fla., said the facts in the case didn’t warrant taking the case against Duper, 54, to trial.
