SCARBOROUGH — There’s only one option for a shooting team when shots aren’t dropping. Just keep shooting.

Scarborough got off to a somewhat slow start against Gorham on Tuesday night but warmed up as the game progressed and rolled to a 65-46 victory at Alumni Gym in a Western Class A boys’ prelim basketball game.

Scarborough advances to face third-seeded Bonny Eagle (15-3) in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Portland Expo.

It looked like it was going to be a long night for both teams early as neither was able to capitalize on opportunities. Kevin Manning opened the game with a 3-pointer for the sixth-seeded Red Storm (13-6) but his team followed with four straight misses from long distance before settling back in and closing out the first quarter on a 13-0 run.

“We got into a flow, started making shots and ran better,” said Scarborough Coach Tony DiBiase. “That’s always been the key for us. We have to make shots because we’re so small, nobody over 6 feet tall.”

Gorham (6-13), the 11th seed making its first tournament appearance in five seasons, couldn’t take advantage of Scarborough’s start. After creeping out to a 4-3 lead 21/2 minutes into the contest, the Rams simply couldn’t buy a basket. They went nearly six minutes without scoring a point and found themselves down 16-4 after one.

“I think we executed what we planned on executing,” said Gorham Coach Ryan Chicoine. “They do a great job up on the top and we were hoping to expose the back side. We got layups but unfortunately we didn’t finish the basket. Tonight the fundamentals of the game kind of bit us.”

Gorham finally enjoyed some success to start the second quarter, working the ball under the basket to Elliot Spiers and Ryan Sullivan, who each had four points as the Rams went on an 8-3 run to close to within 19-12.

Scarborough called a timeout to interrupt the momentum and the Red Storm finished the period with a 9-6 advantage to carry a 28-18 lead into the break.

“We knew we had to come out with intensity because obviously they’re bigger than we are,” said Sam Terry, who paced a balanced Scarborough offense with 20 points. “We had to attack the boards and knock down shots, and it worked.

The Rams opened the second half with a 6-2 run to make it 30-24, but the Red Storm answered with a 19-5 run to take a commanding 49-29 lead.

“I thought Gorham had us on the ropes for a little while in the third quarter but we just got into a flow and started knocking down shots,” said DiBiase.

The Red Storm win sets the stage for a rematch against Bonny Eagle.

In their only meeting this season, the Scots shaded the Red Storm 59-58 in overtime on Feb. 1.
