Ahmed Ismail Ahmed of Deering drives to the basket against Spencer Carey of Lawrence during the East-West Challenge at Windham.
High school basketball teams in Maine are making preparations for season openers Friday and Saturday. That's the beginning of what teams hope lead to tournament berths in late February.
At Windham High, the annual East-West Challenge was held Tuesday with eight Class A teams participating. The games matched Deering vs. Lawrence, Portland vs. Hampden Academy, Windham vs. Lewiston and Bonny Eagle vs. Edward Little. It provided a good final tuneup before the games count.
On opening night, defending Class A state champion Deering will open its title defense against Thornton Academy. Watch the game live at pressherald.com/sports.
