BRUNSWICK — Kristen Kannegieser of Minot shot a 5-over 79 on Monday to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Maine Women's Amateur at Brunswick Golf Club.
Kannegieser finished with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole. Four players were one shot behind Kannegieser, including Saco's Emily Bouchard, who won the inaugural Maine Women's Amateur last summer. She was tied with Laurie Hyndman of Cumberland, Leslie Guenther of Norway and Melissa Johnson of Auburn.
Kannegieser is a two-time winner of the Women's Maine State Golf Association championship, considered the unofficial state championship before last year. Bouchard won the WMSGA title in 2011.
Hyndman and Guenther are former Southern Maine Women's Golf Association champions.
Monica Austin, 17, of Yarmouth opened with an 81, as did Liz Coffin and Cecily Whiting. Coffin, a former UMaine basketball star, made four birdies but took a quadruple-bogey on the par-4 ninth.
Two-time WMSGA champ Lori Frost and Mary Brandes of Falmouth were among four players at 8-over 82.
A total of 19 golfers were within five shots of the lead heading into the second day of the 54-hole tournament.
