CAPE ELIZABETH – Cape Elizabeth kept its cool down the stretch to pull out a 10-8 victory against Scarborough in a girls’ lacrosse game Friday night at foggy Hannaford Field.

Talley Perkins scored all three of her goals in the final 14 minutes as the Capers (5-2) rebounded from Thursday’s 8-7 loss to Yarmouth.

The Red Storm (4-3), the three-time defending Class A champions, rallied from an early four-goal deficit to give Cape all it could handle.

“(Scarborough) is a good team, incredibly well-coached, and we’re happy to get out of here with a win,” Cape Elizabeth Coach Jeff Perkins said.

Early on it looked like the Capers were going to cruise to victory.

With Lauren Steidl winning the first five draws, Cape dominated the first 15 minutes, rolling to an early 4-0 lead.

“The taste of the loss was sour and it pushed us to get out to a real fast start,” Talley Perkins said.

The Red Storm, who returned only three starters from last year, came back in the final 10 minutes of the half to close within two. Scarborough scored on three consecutive shots in three minutes to make it 5-3 with less than eight minutes left in the half.

Scarborough scored the first four goals of the second half to open an 8-6 lead with less than 15 minutes left before the Capers rallied.

“The girls showed their heart and their desire,” Jeff Perkins said.

“The girls were dead tired at the end of the game but they didn’t overplay and it worked. At the end they did exactly what they were supposed to do.”

Talley Perkins started the late-game rally by putting in a free-position shot from about 10 yards. After Hannah Newhall scored her fourth goal of the game to make it 8-8 with less than 13 minutes left, Perkins completed the scoring.

It was the second loss in two days for the Red Storm.

On Thursday, Cheverus pulled out a 9-7 victory after Scarborough rallied for five goals in the second half to send the game into overtime on its home turf.

“We’re working on playing a full game rather than a piece of the game here and there.” Scarborough Coach Marcia Wood said.

Goalies from both teams made big saves in the second half to keep the game close.

In the final 12 minutes, Scarborough’s Meg Kirsh made five of her 11 saves and Kate Bosworth of Cape Elizabeth made five of her seven.

Steidl, who won 10 of 18 draws, scored twice.

Freshman attacker Abby Corbin led the Red Storm with three goals. Jessica Meader scored two goals, and Kaitlin Prince scored a goal and had two assists. Avery Pietras and Bailey Adams each scored a goal.

The Capers held a 26-20 edge in shots.

“Cape is a fantastic team and to be able to stay in the game with them shows our perseverance,” Wood said.

“I feel I have a very talented team and it’s just a matter of execution.”
