WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Tommy Lawrence took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and wound up allowing one hit over eight innings as Maine defeated Hartford 9-3 in a baseball game at West Hartford, Conn., on Saturday.

The Black Bears (12-12, 3-1 America East) struck early against Hartford (2-14, 2-2) with three runs in the top of the first, as Colin Gay singled and scored on Michael Fransoso’s home run over the right-field fence.

Later in the same inning, Alex Calbick walked and scored on Fran Whitten’s double for a 3-0 lead. 

In the second inning, Fransoso doubled home Gay and then Calbrick homered in the third for a 5-0 lead.

In his eight innings, Lawrence allowed just one unearned run on one hit, with eight strikeouts and a walk.

Fransoso finished with two runs scored and three RBI.

BOWDOIN, FRAMINGHAM STATE SPLIT: Bowdoin (8-6) finished its Florida trip by splitting a doubleheader with Framingham State (4-7) at Winter Haven, Fla.

Bowdoin’s Oliver Van Zant took a 2-1 loss in the first game, pitching a complete game with six hits and nine strikeouts.

In the second game, Bowdoin’s Henry Van Zant hurled a 3-0 shutout, allowing five hits and striking out six.

USM, DEPAUW SPLIT: After DePauw (3-4) won the opener 10-2, Nick Grady’s two-run triple highlighted a seven-run first inning as Southern Maine won the second game, 12-6, at Auburndale, Fla.

Sam Dexter’s three hits led a 16-hit attack for the Huskies (6-2). Tucker White, Grady, John Carey and Chris Bernard each had a pair of hits and two RBI in the game for the Huskies.

In the first game, John Carey had three hits for USM, and Forrest Chadwick added a solo homer.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

TRINITY 17, BATES 4: Trinity (5-0, 2-0 NESCAC) raced away from a 3-3 tie, outscoring Bates 14-1 over the final 36 minutes in a win over the Bobcats (3-4, 1-3) at Lewiston.

For Bates, freshman Kelan McKenna had two goals.

COLBY 14, TUFTS 9: Junior Lindsay McKenna scored four goals to lead Colby (4-0, 2-0 NESCAC) in a victory over Tufts (3-2, 1-2) at Medford, Mass.

McKenna achieved her 100th career goal with the effort, becoming the 12th player in the program to reach that mark.

Kate Pistel and Katie Griffin each scored two goals for the Mules during a five-goal run at the start of the second half to give Colby a 10-4 lead.

MEN’S LACROSSE

USM 19, ST. JOSEPH’S 3: Kyle Baker, Mark White, Kayle Hamilton and Dylan Kenney all had hat tricks for Southern Maine (3-3), as the Huskies routed St. Joseph’s (3-5) at Gorham.

BOWDOIN 11, HAMILTON 5: Franklin Reis scored three goals for Bowdoin (3-2, 2-2 NESCAC) in a win over the Continentals (3-2, 2-2) at Brunswick.

BATES 14, TRINITY 6: Jack Strain had three goals and two assists, while Jack Allard and Rob Highland each had three goals and one assist, as Bates (4-3, 3-2) recorded its largest margin of victory in a NESCAC game since 2001, rolling past Trinity (2-4, 0-2) at Hartford, Conn.

SOFTBALL

BATES, MAINE MARITIME SPLIT: Alayna Garbino scored on Anna Berenson’s ground out in the top of the eighth as Bates (4-4) beat Maine Maritime 7-6 to salvage the second game of a doubleheader at Castine.

AnnMarie Martino had two hits, scored twice and drove home a run for the Bobcats, while Caroline Gattuso and Alex Elioppoulos each added two hits and two RBI.

Sabrina Keach led Maine Maritime with two runs, two hits and three RBI.

The Mariners won the first game 10-6, as Kelsie Hilton hit a three-run homer while Keach and Hayley Rae each had two-run shots.

Keach finished the day with four hits and seven RBI.

AMHERST 10, USM 4: Amherst (8-3) won easily in the first game of a doubleheader for the Huskies at Clermont, Fla.

USM’s Katie Davis finished with two hits, including a double, the 37th of her career — a new record for the Huskies.

ST. BENEDICT 12, USM 4: In the second game, St. Benedict (3-2) scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to beat the Huskies (0-4).

USM’s Kristen Duross drove in two runs and Stefanie Stockwell struck out five in six innings for the Huskies.

MAINE, UMBC SPLIT: Maine dropped its conference opener, 4-2, to Maryland-Baltimore County, then regrouped at Baltimore, Md., for an 11-7 second-game win in nine innings to improve to 4-26 on the year.

In the first game, Maine’s Hilary Kane had an RBI double in the first and Jean Stevens hit her league-leading seventh homer in the top of the sixth.

Black Bear pitcher Beth Spoehr pitched 52/3 innings, giving up four runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

In the second game, Kane hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Stevens had a solo shot in the third — her eighth homer.

The Black Bears exploded for six runs to put the game away in the ninth inning on a walk, five singles and a double.
