Maine Baseball Hall of Fame announces 2010 inductees

The Maine Baseball Hall of Fame announced it will welcome 13 new members at its annual induction ceremony and banquet.

The 2010 inductees:

• Leonardo "Leon" Buck of Bath, a dominant pitcher for Morse High and Bowdoin College during the 1930s and also hurled for the semipro Bath Clippers in the Heart O' Maine League.

• Tim Curley of Sanford, a two-time All-New England outfielder at the University of Southern Maine who played three years in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization.

• Gary Dube of Gorham, who led Biddeford High to its first state championship in 1984 and went on to star at the University of Maine. Dube played 15 seasons in the Twilight League and Northern New England Semipro Baseball League.

• George Ferguson of Sabattus, a slugging third baseman for the University of Maine in the 1960s who later played three seasons in the New York Yankees' organization.

• Pat Feury of South Portland, a career .300 hitter for the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham (later USM) who also enjoyed a 20-year career as a player-coach in the Twilight League.

• Kevin Joyce of Standish, an All-Telegram League catcher at Cheverus and an all-conference selection while playing for the University of Southern Maine. Joyce has umpired for 26 years at the high school, college and professional levels.

• Jeff Paul of Orrington, a three-time All-New England Division I selection who played in four consecutive College World Series for the University of Maine from 1981-84.

• Charles "Marty" Roop of Lisbon Falls, an ace pitcher for Bowdoin College in the 1950s who later played semipro ball for the Lisbon 88ers.

• Hubert "Billy" Shaw of Presque Isle, who manned first base for Bowdoin College and the semipro Presque Isle Indians in the 1930s and was selected to the U.S. Olympic baseball demonstration team in 1936.

• Clayton Sockabasin of Princeton, a dominant pitcher for Peter Dana Point in the Border and Quoddy Leagues who amassed over 250 wins in a career that spanned four decades.

• Patrick Sockabasin of Old Town, brother and teammate of Clayton on the Peter Dana Point teams. A pitcher, catcher and shortstop, he compiled a .400 career average in the Washington County and New Brunswick semipro leagues.

• Ron Staples of Presque Isle, an all-star catcher for the semipro Presque Isle Indians in the Maine-New Brunswick League who went on to play five seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization.

• Norman White of Dover-Foxcroft, who played four years for Colby College from 1947-50 and went on to win two high school state championships while coaching at Hartland Academy and Foxcroft Academy.

The banquet will be held July 25 at the Holiday Inn the Bay in Portland.
