STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Carolyne Nellis scored twice as the sixth-seeded Maine women’s soccer team knocked off No. 2 Stony Brook 3-1 on Sunday in the America East semifinals.

Maine (9-8) is the first No. 6 seed to advance to the American East title game.

Kelsey Wilson scored the first goal of the game for Maine 11:32 into the game. Nellis scored 13 minutes later and again midway through the second half.

With Maine leading 3-0, Colleen McKenna scored with just over 10 minutes remaining in the match for Stony Brook (6-10-2). Maine will play Boston University in the championship game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

 

BATES 1, TUFTS 0: Annie Burns stopped three penalty shots and Meredith Poore converted the game-winning penalty kick as the eighth-seeded Bobcats (6-7-2, 2-6-1) edged the top-seeded Jumbos (8-2-4, 6-1-2) in penalty kicks by a score of 3-2 in a NESCAC quarterfinal at Somerville, Mass.

 

AMHERST 3, BOWDOIN 2: Amanda Brisco scored with 26 minutes left in regulation to break a 2-2 tie and lift the second-seeded Lord Jeffs (7-6-2, 5-2-2) over the seventh-seeded Polar Bears (6-7-2, 3-5-1) in a NESCAC quarterfinal at Amherst, Mass.

MEN’S SOCCER

AMHERST 3, COLBY 0: James Mooney scored the eventual game-winner midway through the first half and Alejandro Sucre and Spencer Noon each added second-half insurance goals to lead the fourth-seeded Lord Jeffs (11-1-3, 6-1-3) past the fifth-seeded Mules (7-7-1, 4-6) in a NESCAC quarterfinal at Amherst, Mass.

 

BOWDOIN 5, BATES 2: Nick Powell headed in a chip from Call Nichols one minute into the game as the top-seeded Polar Bears (12-1-2, 6-1-2) raced out to a 4-0 halftime lead and cruised past the No. 8 Bobcats (5-9-1, 2-6-1) in a NESCAC quarterfinal at Brunswick.

FIELD HOCKEY

TUFTS 4, BATES 1: Tamara Brown scored three goals to lead the top-seeded Jumbos (14-1, 8-1) as they raced out to a 3-0 halftime lead and cruised past the eighth-seeded Bobcats (5-10, 2-7) in a NESCAC quarterfinal at Medford, Mass.

 

BOWDOIN 2, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 0: Kassey Matoin and Katie Herter each scored for the No. 2 Polar Bears (14-1) in their NESCAC quarterfinal win at home over the No. 7 Camels (7-8).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

SMCC 91, NOVA SCOTIA 54: Josh Mackie made five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 17 points to lead the Seawolves as they cruised to a win over Nova Scotia at the Can-Am Games at CMCC in Auburn.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SMCC 71, NOVA SCOTIA 61: Ariel LeDuc collected 20 points and 10 rebounds and Christina Ricci made three 3-pointers to lead the Seawolves to a win over Nova Scotia at the Can-Am Games at CMCC in Auburn.

 

FOOTBALL

BCS: Oregon and Auburn swapped spots atop the BCS standings and Boise State has been passed again, this time by TCU.

TCU is third, Boise State fourth and Utah fifth.

The Ducks (8-0) moved into first place for the first time this season. Auburn (9-0) grabbed the top spot last week, but Oregon caught up after beating Southern California 53-32, leaving the Tigers in second place. Oregon is No. 1 in the two polls used in the standings .
