Maine Milestones, July 19, 2011

Emma Deans of Gorham, a 2011 graduate of UMaine-Farmington, has been nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award by the North Atlantic Conference. The award honors graduating student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.The winner will be announced Oct. 16 in Indianapolis. Deans was a three-time all-conference selection in field hockey team and was a New England East Regional All-American. She graduated in May with a 3.95 grade-point average.

Longtime Lewiston High girls' tennis coach Anita Murphy was named Coach of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association. Three years ago, she won a similar honor from the National Federation of State High School Associations. Lewiston has won six consecutive Class A state titles and 12 overall during Murphy's 33-year tenure. She owns a career record of 404-60. This spring, she was one of five recipients of the "Unsung Heroines in Maine Sports" awards presented during the Mentoring Women in Sports XIII Conference, hosted by the Maine Principals' Association.

The Maine Maniacs 12-U girls' basketball team reached the medal round of the AAU Division II seventh-grade national tournament before losing to the North Carolina All-Stars. The Maniacs won all three of their games in pool play, beating the Baltimore Lady Panthers (62-49), Indiana Flight (47-37) and Tennesse Fury (46-44). Team members were Montana Braxton of Cape Elizabeth, Cece Hancock and Spencer True of Lake Region, Maddie Hasson of South Portland, Ashley Howe of Thornton Academy, Chelsea Rairdon of Westbrook, Nia Irving and Dominique Lewis of Lawrence, Emily Jacques of Edward Little, and Caitlin Kane of Mt. Blue.

Westbrook Little League's 9-10-year-old baseball all-stars won the District 6 title, defeating Bayside Little League of Portland 10-0 in the championship game. Westbrook scored six runs in the first inning, sparked by Michael Young's two-run double, and Seth Majic pitched the shutout. Tanner LaFlamme, Kyle Champange and Will Shibles were repeat hitters for Westbrook.

Richard Brazier aced the third hole at Riverside Municipal Golf Course. Brazier used a 3-hybrid for the 188-yard shot, which was witnessed by Bruce McAfee, Richard Olsen and Richard Brown.

Matt Ridell of Buxton scored a hole-in-one on July 11 during the Bonny Eagle Football Tournament, sinking a shot on the 175-yard 13th hole at Dunegrass Golf Club. His playing partners with Andy Ridell and Adam Milne.

Mike Washburn used an 8-iron to ace the 167-yard third hole at Fox Ridge Golf Club on Wednesday. The shot was witnessed by Josh Plowman, Roland Spaulding and Rick Washburn.

Steve Hoxsie made a hole-in-one on the second hole at Nonesuch River Golf Club on Thursday. He used a 6-iron for the 171-yard shot, which was witnessed by Trevor Hoxsie and Kevin Fasulo.

Steve Reiner recorded a hole-in-one on the 155-yard eighth hole at Val Halla Golf Course on Sunday. He used a 9-iron for the shot, which was witnessed by Patrick Herlihy and Zach Lingley.

Jim Raye of Rockland made a hole-in-one on the 220-yard ninth hole at Rockland Golf Club on Sunday. He used a 3-wood for the shot, which was witnessed by Jamie Boutin, Mack Duke, Les Raye and Reily Flanagan.

Stu Axelrod aced the 97-yard 13th hole at Spring Meadows Golf Club on Sunday.
