Drivers Glen Andrews, Ray Leach and Bob Turner, car owner/crew chief Conrad Taylor and motorsports writer Bob Morris will be inducted into the Maine Motorsports Hall of Fame during March 31 ceremonies at the Augusta Civic Center.

Andrews, who grew up in Harrison, began racing as a 15-year-old at Oxford Plains Speedway in 1950 and was the 1960 champion at Northeastern Speedway in Vermont.

Leach, who is from Arundel, began his 25-year racing career in 1960 at Beech Ridge Speedway, where he won Modified and ‘B’ Class Bomber championships.

Morris, of Auburn, spent nearly 30 years covering motorsports, writing for New England Speedway Scene and the Lewiston Sun Journal.

Taylor, who is from Farmington, has spent nearly 50 years as a crew member, crew chief and car owner. His cars won nine track championships and more than 60 races at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Turner, of Waterboro, began racing at age 16 at Arundel Speedway and Hudson (N.H.) Raceway and raced NASCAR Modifieds throughout New England.

Eight of the 10 winners of scholarship awards from the Southern Maine Swim Officials Association were announced this weekend. Since 1993, more than $63,000 in scholarships have gone to graduating seniors who successfully combined academics, citizenship, swimming or diving, coach’s recommendation and a self-assessment essay.

The two highest-scoring applicants received Randy Comeau Memorial awards worth $700: Emily Buell of Poland and Sara Schad of Greely.

Awards of $500 went to Kathryn O’Donoghue of McAuley, Tara Pinette and Lindsey Stephen of Cape Elizabeth, Katie Whittum of Greely, and Drew Fernandez and Lukas Temple of Cheverus.

The final two scholarships will be awarded next weekend at the South Southwesterns in Cape Elizabeth.

Chris Angell was honored as male player of the year and Margaret Silverman received the female player of the year award at the Maine Tennis Association’s annual awards ceremony, held Jan. 28 at the Racket and Fitness Center in Portland.

Among other award winners: Men’s doubles team – Charlie Cianciolo and Jon Parry; Women’s doubles team – Helen Boucher and Elisa Whittier; Mixed doubles team – Tim Lacombe and Jody Sataloff; Men’s 55-plus – Dick McLeod; Men’s 35-plus – Leo Scheidl.
