ORONO – Mike Connolly singled home a run and scored during a five-run sixth inning in the opener, then scored the winning run and earned a save in the second game as the University of Maine swept an America East baseball doubleheader Sunday against Binghamton, 5-2 and 3-2.

The Black Bears (17-14 overall, 8-3 America East) maintained their hold on first place in the conference by erasing 2-0 deficits in each game.

Maine’s rally in the opener began with a single by Michael Fransoso, who eventually scored on a passed ball. Singles by Scott Heath, Eric White, Connolly and Troy Black brought home two more runs, and Colin Gay hit a two-run double.

Tommy Lawrence (5-2) pitched a seven-hitter with seven strikeouts to earn his fourth straight win.

A two-run homer by Jake Thomas in the first inning of Game 2 gave Binghamton (14-11, 5-6) a 2-0 lead, which held until Maine scored three runs in the fifth on a double by Alex Calbick, singles by Brian Doran and Connolly and a double by Troy Black.

A.J. Bazdanes (4-3) allowed five hits in seven innings before Connolly finished up with two perfect innings of relief.

UMASS-BOSTON 11, ST. JOSEPH’S 5: Nic Lops went 2 for 4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs for the Monks (14-7) in a loss to the Beacons (9-8) at Brockton, Mass.

The Monks led 5-0 before UMass-Boston rallied for six runs in the seventh and five in the eighth.

SMCC SPLITS WITH DEAN: Alex Brown had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored for Southern Maine Community College (15-13-1) in a 12-8 win at Franklin, Mass.

The Seawolves lost the second game, 5-1.

SOFTBALL

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS MT. IDA: Theresa Hendrix hit a two-run single during a four-run third inning for the Monks (19-5, 11-3 GNAC) in a 5-2 victory over the Mustangs (9-14, 3-9) at Newton, Mass.

In Game 2, Heather Tripp had a pair of hits, drove in three runs and scored once to pace a 10-hit attack for the Monks, who cruised to a 10-0 win in five innings.

ALBANY SWEEPS MAINE: Charlise Castro belted a three-run homer in the second game as the Great Danes (18-7, 5-0 America East) completed a sweep against the Black Bears (5-28, 2-3) with an 8-4 victory after winning the opener 5-2 at Orono.

Hannah Hill had two hits, including a home run, for Maine in the first game. EmJ Fogel had a pair of hits and two RBI in Game 2.

ENDICOTT SWEEPS UNE: Sam DiBella and Krista Fales combined for 11 hits and five RBI while leading the Gulls (4-10, 4-0 Commonwealth Coast) to 8-0 and 10-8 victories over the University of New England (11-9, 5-5) at Beverly, Mass.

Adrienne Chase hit a pair of two-run homers in the second game for UNE, which grabbed a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning on two-run doubles by Amanda Vallente and Amanda Vaudreuil. But Endicott countered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth on two-run singles by Byrne Katz and Kelley Michael.

SMCC SWEPT BY DEAN: The Seawolves fell 16-2 in the opener and lost 8-0 in Game 2 at Franklin, Mass.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

TRINITY 8, COLBY 4: Shea Kusiak tallied twice as the defending national champion Bantams (9-0, 6-0 NESCAC) scored the final four goals to defeat the Mules (8-1, 5-1) at Waterville.

Trinity, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III, pushed its winning streak to 17 games, while sixth-ranked Colby lost for just the second time in three years on its home field.

Katharine Eddy led Colby with a goal and an assist. Sara Miller, Katie Griffin and Lindsey McKenna also scored.

BOWDOIN 14, ENDICOTT 8: Carolyn Gorajek scored three goals and set up another to become the Polar Bears’ all-time scoring leader, and goaltender Tara Connolly tied the school’s record with her 40th career win as the Polar Bears (7-2) beat the Gulls (7-5) at Brunswick.

Gorajek increased her career point total to 206, passing Adrienne Gratry’s 203. Connolly stopped six shots to tie Steph Collins-Finn on the victory list.

Jordan Smith also scored three goals, and Mackenzie Schleicher and Taylor Wilson added two apiece.

SOUTHERN MAINE 20, HUSSON 3: Jacki Kelly and Samantha Purcell scored three goals apiece as the Huskies (7-3) beat the Eagles (3-5) at Bangor.

Lauren Santo, Rosie Forster, Jenna Cyr, Nicole LaPlante, Anh Nguyen and Shauna Robert each added two goals for USM. Alissa Fallon scored twice for Husson.

MEN’S LACROSSE

TRINITY 11, COLBY 8: Rob Nogueras and Matt Cohen scored three times each to lead the Bantams (4-7, 2-4 NESCAC) past the Mules (4-6, 1-5) at Hartford, Conn.

Ian Deveau had two goals and an assist for Colby. Derek Youngman contributed two goals, and John Jennings had a goal and two assists.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

DIVISION III FINAL: Allen Williamson scored 18 points and Amherst pulled away late to beat Mary Hardin-Baylor 87-70 in Atlanta and win its second national championship.

Connor Green and national player of the year Aaron Toomey scored 16 points each, and Willy Workman had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Lord Jeffs (30-2).

The victory pushed Amherst’s winning streak to a school-record 24 games, and matched the school record for wins in a season set by the 2007 national championship team.
