ORONO – The University of Maine women’s basketball team suffered its worst shooting of the season Friday night in a 65-43 loss to Navy in the opening round of the Dead River Classic at Alfond Arena.

Maine (1-3) made 15 of 65 (23.1 percent) field goals but only trailed 20-17 at halftime after hitting 5 of 28 (17.9 percent) field goals in the first half.

Navy (4-1) pulled away by connecting on 7 of 13 3-pointers in the second half. Cassie Consedine, who scored a game-high 16 points, hit consecutive 3-pointers in the opening minutes of the second half for a 28-19 lead with 17:13 left. But the real damage came from a 22-5 run that began with two free throws by Jade Geif at 14:11 and culminated with a 3-point play by Alix Membreno that gave Navy its largest lead, 55-28, with 5:24 left.

MAINE 4, ROBERT MORRIS 2: Brittany Ott made 42 saves, Brittany Dougherty had a goal and two assists and the Black Bears (6-6-2) scored two unanswered goals in the third period to beat the Colonials (2-12) at Pittsburgh.

Dawn Sullivan scored on a power play following assists from Danielle Ward and Dougherty 7:49 into the third period. Myriam Crousette added an insurance goal, set up by Norum and Dougherty, with 2:50 left.
