Baseball Notebook: Manny Ramirez cut by Rangers in bid to come back

The Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Texas – Manny Ramirez was released Tuesday from his minor league contract by the Texas Rangers.

Ramirez, 41, hit .259 with three home runs and 13 RBI in 30 games for Triple-A Round Rock after agreeing to a deal early last month. He hit all of the homers in the first eight games.

Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels said Ramirez was released so he could pursue other opportunities if he chooses.

Daniels said based on the team's evaluation, there wasn't a spot on the Rangers' roster for Ramirez.

Nelson Cruz, the suspended outfielder, headed home to the Dominican Republic. He will return to Texas later this month.

Matt Harrison, the opening-day starter who has had two surgeries on a herniated disk in his lower back, won't pitch again this season.

Texas added infielder Adam Rosales to the 25-man roster and optioned outfielder Engel Beltre to Triple-A Round Rock.

BLUE JAYS: Right-hander Josh Johnson was put on the 15-day disabled list with a sore forearm and right-hander Thad Weber was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo.

TWINS: The team placed first baseman Justin Morneau on revocable waivers.

RAYS: Right-hander Alex Cobb is expected to pitch Thursday night for the first time in the majors since getting hit in the head by a ball in June, according to Manager Joe Maddon.

ROYALS: Third baseman Mike Moustakas was out of the lineup against Miami because of a Grade 1 strain of his left calf he sustained Monday night.

PIRATES: Pittsburgh scratched Jose Tabata due to flu-like symptoms and plugged in Andrew Lambo, who has hit 31 homers in the minors this year.
