CLEVELAND - The Indians released right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka at his request, giving the Japanese veteran a chance to catch on with another team after failing to secure a spot in Cleveland's rotation.
Matsuzaka, 32, has spent the entire season at Triple-A Columbus after failing to win a spot in Cleveland's rotation during spring training.
We didn't have an immediate major league opportunity for Daisuke," Cleveland general manager Chris Antonetti said on Tuesday.
"He had been throwing well in Triple-A, and thought that he may have a better opportunity elsewhere, so he asked for his release, and we granted it."
RANGERS: Right-hander Alexi Ogando is on the disabled list for the third time this season.
Texas had initially been hopeful that Ogando would miss only one start after getting an injection for an inflamed nerve in his right shoulder. Instead, he was put on the DL on Tuesday.
Washington said Ogando (5-4, 3.47 ERA in 15 starts) thought he would have been ready when it was his turn to pitch again next week.
ASTROS: Catcher Carlos Corporan was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list, a day after being struck in the head by a foul tip.
Corporan was headed back to Houston, where he was slated to see a specialist Wednesday.
ANGELS: Mike Trout was out of the Los Angeles starting lineup for the second straight game to rest his tight right hamstring.
Trout missed consecutive games for the first time in the last two seasons Tuesday night when the Angels hosted Cleveland.
TWINS: Joe Mauer was scratched from the lineup against the Detroit Tigers because he experienced dizziness Tuesday night in batting practice.
• The Twins recalled right-handed reliever Michael Tonkin from Triple-A Rochester.
Tonkin appeared in one game for the Twins on July 11.
GIANTS: San Francisco placed right-hander Chad Gaudin on the 15-day disabled list with carpal tunnel syndrome and designated outfielder Jeff Francoeur for assignment.
The Giants also recalled lefty Mike Kickham and right-hander Jean Machi from Triple-A Fresno to replace Gaudin and Francoeur on the 25-man roster.
Barry Zito, who has not started since July 30, will replace Gaudin in the rotation and start Wednesday against the Red Sox. Zito is 4-8 with a 5.34 ERA this season.
METS: A team doctor is recommending that right-hander Jeremy Hefner have Tommy John surgery.
Hefner, dealing with a sore elbow all season, was put on the disabled list last week.
Mets manager Terry Collins said team medical director Dr. David Altchek recommended the surgery. Collins said Hefner may seek another opinion.
The 27-year-old Hefner is 4-8 with a 4.34 ERA. He was 0-2 with a 7.58 ERA in his past six starts.
REDS: Left-hander Tony Cingrani strained his lower back during the fourth inning of Tuesday's game against Arizona and left for treatment.
