Nine enter Maine Hall

The latest class inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame includes former standout players and a coach still active.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame inducted its latest class at a banquet Sunday at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland.

The new members are: Raymond A. Baum, posthumously; Bob Brown, Dave Cloutier, Guy Garon, Allen Harvie, Brian Mavor, Dr. Frederick Radke, Tom Thornton and Lynn Welch.

Baum was a standout in the Pine Tree League, a semipro baseball league. He died in 1986.

Brown has been a longtime successful high school basketball coach. He coached Cheverus to the 2010 Class A state championship.

Cloutier was a star running back at the University of Maine in the early 1960s and played a season with the Boston Patriots in the American Football League in 1964.

Garon was a three-sport standout at St. Louis High in Biddeford and played football for Boston College.

Harvie was a track standout at South Portland High and Bates College.

Mavor was a tennis champion at Cape Elizabeth and a four-year starter for North Carolina State.

Radke was a football standout at Dartmouth College and before that at Orono High.

Thornton starred in three sports at Cheverus and later as a quarterback at Boston University.

Welch won three straight Maine interscholastic girls' singles tennis titles while at South Portland. She played at Rollins College in Florida and currently is a tennis official at major tournaments.

The Hall also honored 10 scholar athletes: Laura Getchell, Gray-New Gloucester; Lucas Hubbard, Jonesport-Beals; Harold Lyons, John Bapst; Jennifer Roberts, Sanford; Liana Rubinoff, Cheverus; Hannah Schuchert, Freeport; Samuel Seekins, Erskine Academy; Vinny Tymoczko, Bucksport; Bandon Wilcox, Bangor Christian and Rachel Wilkinson, Gorham.
