The senior captain from Winslow continues to score. The freshman from Dayton (and Thornton Academy) is showing soccer savvy. And the junior from Lyman (and Massabesic High) has transferred back home.
All of which makes the University of New England women's soccer team a success so far this season.
The Nor'easters jumped to a 4-0 start before suffering a 2-1 loss to Colby on Wednesday night.
"Really pleased," second-year coach Heather Davis said earlier in the week. "We've shown improvement over last year in a lot of areas, and I was already pleased last year."
UNE finished 12-7 last year and reached the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament semifinals.
Senior Katie Caron, a former All-State player from Winslow High, leads the team with four goals and three assists.
Freshman Kaitlyn Hall, from Thornton Academy, has three goals. "Super athletic and hard working," Davis said. "She has a real gift of being in the right place at the right time."
Junior defender Emily Lodge pushes the action from the back. She has one goal and three assists. Lodge transferred to UNE from Franklin Pierce in New Hampshire.
Several others are contributing to the strong start, including senior defender and co-captain Jesalyn Dvorak, senior goalkeeper Jess Woodworth and junior forward Lauren Blaisdell of Scarborough.
ST. JOSEPH'S is off to a 3-1 start in men's soccer after Tuesday's 1-0 win over Southern Maine. Sophomore Zach Johnson of Westbrook is one of the Monks' leaders with two goals and an assist.
IN CROSS COUNTRY, the USM men won their first meet, taking the UNE Invitational at Rotary Park in Biddeford.
The Huskies placed four runners in the top 10, led by sophomore Julian Gazzelloni of Windham. He covered the 8-kilometer course in 28 minutes, 26 seconds. Seniors Brett Baker (Sanford) and Erich Neuts (Portland) finished fourth and sixth, and sophomore Jon Clement of South Portland was 10th.
The host Nor'easters won the women's race, placing five runners in the top 10, led by Colleen Ahern (third place) and Annelise Donahue of South Portland (sixth).
USM's Molly Carl (York) and Morgan Beede (Augusta) placed 1-2.
MAINE MARITIME Academy opened its football season with a 42-13 win over Anna Maria last Saturday. Sophomore Ian Champeon of Dover-Foxcroft rushed for 206 yards and a touchdown. Fullback Tom Marcisso of Scarborough added a 1-yard touchdown run.
TOMMY STIRLING of Gorham and Southern Maine Community College was the medalist in a recent Yankee Small College Conference golf match, shooting a 67 at The Meadows Golf Club in Litchfield.
