Maine Colleges: One goal carries Southern Maine in men's soccer

GORHAM - Freshman midfielder Michael Daniel scored in the 61st minutes Saturday and the University of Southern Maine went on to a 1-0 victory against UMass-Boston in a Little East Conference men's soccer game.

Daniel struck a free kick past the wall and inside the near post for his second winning goal of the season for the Huskies (2-8, 1-2).

Jeremy Turner posted four saves for the shutout against the Beacons (2-5-2, 0-3).

TRINITY 1, COLBY 0: Christian Carrasquillo scored in the 102nd minute as the Bantams (4-1-3, 3-1-2 NESCAC) edged the Mules (2-3-2, 0-2-2) at Waterville.

Cody Funkouser stopped seven shots for Colby, which hasn't allowed a regulation goal in its four conference games.

SMCC 3, EMCC 0: Jonathan D'Haiti had a goal and an assist as the Seawolves (7-3, 7-1 YSCC) shut out the Golden Eagles (1-5, 1-5) at South Portland.

Adam Burpee and Peter Dore also scored.

BOWDOIN 0, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 0: Will Wise finished with six saves for the Polar Bears (5-1-1, 2-1-1 NESCAC) against the Camels (2-2-3, 0-2-3) at Brunswick.

Casey Marini made eight saves for the Camels, who were outshot 16-11 by the Polar Bears.

HAMILTON 3, BATES 1: Bayard Geeslin, Erich Marcks and Anthony Balbo scored to lead the Continentals (2-4-1, 1-4-1 NESCAC) over the Bobcats (2-4-1, 0-4-1) at Clinton, N.Y.

Bates cut the deficit to 2-1 when Ethan Hirshberg scored 13:32 into the second half.

UNE 2, ENDICOTT 1: Ethan Wells and Will Bushey scored four minutes apart late in the first half and the Nor'easters (5-5, 1-2 Commonwealth Coast) held off the Gulls (5-5-2, 0-2-1) despite being outshot 32-7 at Beverly, Mass.

Wells opened the scoring from Ian Goodney in the 31st minute and Bushey made it 2-0 from Michel Keenan Jr. Endicott got its goal in the 40th minute.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

BOWDOIN 3, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 2: Molly Popolizio scored her second goal of the game for the Polar Bears (6-1, 3-1 NESCAC) just 1:18 after the Camels (1-5-1, 0-5) tied it midway through the second half at Brunswick.

Trailing 1-0, Jamie Hofstetter tied it for Bowdoin after 20:43. The Polar Bears took their first led when Popolizio scored 1:32 into the second half.

HAMILTON 2, BATES 0: Hallie Becker and Alex Rimmer scored as the Continentals (6-1, 4-1 NESCAC) beat the Bobcats (1-5, 1-4) at Clinton, NY.

Rimmer moved into third place on the Continentals' all-time list with 72 career points on 33 goals and six assists.

UMASS-BOSTON 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Krista Ledin scored two second-half goals as the Beacons (9-1, 3-0 Little East) pulled away from Southern Maine (1-9, 0-3) at Boston.

Sam Cristoforo received a pass from Julie Nutting and hit a shot through traffic to beat USM goalkeeper Katie Cobb for a 1-0 lead after 10 minutes.

TRINITY 3, COLBY 1: Abbey Lake did all of the scoring for the Bantams (4-4, 3-4 NESCAC) against the Mules (5-2, 2-2) at Waterville.

Annie Papadellis tied it for Colby early in the second half before Lake gave Trinity the lead for good six minutes later.

FIELD HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 7, CONNECTICUT COLLEGE 0: Brooke Phinney opened the scoring 3:19 into the game, and finished with four goals and one assist as the Polar Bears (6-1, 2-1 NESCAC) routed the Camels (4-3, 2-3) at Brunswick.

Rachel Kennedy added a goal and an assist, and Katie Riley collected a pair of assists for the Polar Bears, who had a 23-3 advantage in shots.
