Pirates roster finalized for opener

The opening-day roster of the Portland Pirates will consist of 15 forwards, six defensemen and two goaltenders.

The AHL team's roster was trimmed to 23 players Friday after goaltender Louis Domingue and forward Brenden Walker were assigned to the Gwinnett Gladiators of the East Coast Hockey League and defensemen Greg Coburn and Karill Tulupov were released.

The roster includes 15 players who spent time with the Pirates last season, including Andy Miele, the 2011 Hobey Baker Award winner as college hockey's top player who led the squad with 53 points.

Eleven players were drafted by NHL parent Phoenix Coyotes. That group includes includes three first-round picks -- defensemen Brandon Gormley and Connor Murphy, and goalie Mark Visentin.

Tim Kennedy returns to the Pirates after spending the past four seasons with the New York Rangers, Florida Panthers and San Jose Sharks organizations.

During his rookie season in 2008-09, Kennedy led the Pirates with 67 points on 18 goals and 49 assists.

Defenseman Mathieu Brisebois, one of the five rookies on the roster, becomes the first member of the former Lewiston Maineiacs to suit up for the Pirates.

The Pirates will open the season Wednesday night against the Manchester Monarchs at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, where the team is scheduled to play all its home games.
